Some will know him from Spirit Family Reunion, others from his work with The Deslondes, or from the many records he’s quietly elevated along the way. But once you hear him sing…really hear him…it’s not something you forget.
Mat has an uncanny ability to reshape a song from the inside out. No excess, no affectation. Every note feels necessary. Every line lands with a sense of lived truth and never forced, but always honest.
This is music you give yourself over to it. When I listen, it’s a kind of surrender. It can briefly pull me away from the noise, the headlines, the weight of the world…without pretending those things aren’t still there. A rare feeling, indeed.

The recorded version of this song on Mashed Potato Records is hauntingly beautiful, the way they've added the reverb elevates Twain voice and performance so much. Amazing to see him on WAF! This song really reminds me of The Parting Glass by The Minor Birds. Similarities in the feel, flow and parts of the vocal melody. Very late 60’s early 70’s British folk revival.
I really enjoyed the song.

The cord progression and melody sound almost east Asian, the voice sounds like Appalachian folk, and the lyrics are like an old hymn. I think i needed this today.

Been a fan of his since seeing him live, playing in Langhorne Slim's band a few years back. I remember being immediately grabbed by his guitar/pedal steel playing and singing. This is excellent, thank you!
