Aniar | Anach Cuan | Western AF
In Ireland, a song is never just a song.
Meet Abby, Jennifer and Sorcha. Three incredible voices, brought together by a shared love of song. Voices that seem to rise from somewhere deep within the land itself.
Together, they form Aniar, a three piece Irish vocal group blending the respected art of sean-nós singing with traditional Irish music.
For a time, the Irish language, Gaeilge, was considered to be in decline, with some predicting it could disappear within a century. Today, though, there’s a renewed interest in learning and speaking the language. And while it’s hard to say exactly what’s driving that revival, I can’t help but wonder if music has something to do with it. Especially artists and groups like Kneecap, bringing Irish into new spaces and introducing it to a whole new generation. But with a group like Aniar coming into the fold, I think they’re respectfully carving out their own place in helping renew that interest too.
We filmed this in Phoenix Park, Dublin, one of Europe’s largest enclosed urban parks.
For a while, it felt as though the park belonged to the voices. Or maybe the voices belonged to the park. Hard to say.
Sometimes you just stand there and let the song take you.

Lyrics:
Má fhaighimse sláinte is fada a bheas trácht ar
an mhéid a báthadh as Anach Cuan.
Mo thrua amárach gach athair is máthair
bean is páiste atá ag sileadh súl.
A Rí na ngrásta, cheap neamh is Párthas,
nár bheag an tábhacht dúinn beirt ná triúr?
Ach lá chomh breá leis gan gaoth gan báisteach
is lán an bháid acu a scuabadh ar hiúil.

Aniar means “from the west”, so that goes quite well with the channel’s name!

Ooo yay, it's great to see them on here and this is lovely! Tá mé ag foghlaim na Gaeilge (I'm learning Irish) and Irish music is definitely one of the reasons why I've started learning.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, folklorists like the Grimm brothers, William John Thoms, BA Botkin, and Alan Lomax made it their mission to record folk tales and other stories to record local communities' stories and folk songs. They were motivated by goals of preserving national identity and rural culture that was being transformed by mechanization and industrialization. The Western AF gang is on a similar mission. Someday these field recordings will be preserved as a national treasure (and now international– Erin Go Bragh!).
