The Drumming That Made “Spoonman” A Grunge Classic

Drumeo | January 9, 2026

Join us as Matt Cameron breaks down the drumming behind “Spoonman,” the Soundgarden hit that helped define the grunge era. Released in 1994 on ‘Superunknown’, the song’s iconic groove began in an unexpected place — with a real-life street performer who would ultimately change rock history.

In this session, Matt shares how that raw, percussive inspiration shaped the song, the creative choices behind the drum part, and why “Spoonman” still stands as one of the most unforgettable grooves of the ’90s.

Top 3 90s metal/rock drummers for me are:

    1. Sean Kinney
    2. Matt Cameron
    3. Jimmy Chamberlin

We need Sean on here now, here's the fucking GOAT, super underrated and also under-estimated in skill. Never showed off or solo'd but had some of the craziest drum parts with super complex grooves.

Matt's posture while playing is a thing of beauty. He's got perfect economy of movement, he's relaxed, his head is up and so he can clearly see the whole kit (and the band in front of him), and the kit itself is positioned to perfectly fit his body. I could never play was well as Matt, but I take inspiration by how he physically plays the drums.
