Neal Brennan | September 6, 2026

In this episode of Blocks, Neal Brennan sits down with comedian Gianmarco Soresi to discuss the unconventional path that led him to standup. They dive into his childhood experiences with divorce, his short-lived dreams of becoming a professional singer and actor, and the deep-seated desire for “glory” that keeps him on stage. Gianmarco also opens up about his relationship with his parents, his thoughts on depression and Adderall, and how he’s learning to find balance between his workaholic nature and his personal life.

Gianmarco was and remains a quick favorite. Watching the two of you have this conversation was super interesting. I’m actually surprised by your dissimilarities and not friends ^^

wow this really hits home… thanks for talking so candidly. I had the same experience (but in music) of achieving my dreams and only then realizing I'd been accidentally ignoring my problems the entire time… my obsession to succeed was omnipresent in my life, literally every minute I was awake, so day-to-day i never had to face my issues. it's an odd problem, bc i'm grateful for what I got to do, but achieving those things oddly coincided with realizing i've got a ton of issues lol. anyway you're hilarious and insightful, thanks for being that way 🙂

My step kids are here half the week and at moms the other half. But we are flexible and they only live a few miles away as well as their school (which I used to work at lol). I am on the school's email list and me and their Mom text all the time. What's really important is ROUTINE and CONSISTENCY. Plus being respectful co parents. There was never any "custody battle". They had a mediator and worked together FOR THE KIDS. We switch around schedules for holidays and vacations and sickness quarantines 😂😂😂😂 it helps we live so close.

Couple things on the divorce timing thing:

    • it's worse for an only child
    • two houses back and forth sucks (I was weekly, pickup at school on Friday was the changeover mostly)
    • also three stepsisters with stepfather and antagonism… But worse…
    • they were visiting churches on the weeks that I wasn't there because the girls mom was Christian and they wanted faith. So one week I came home to learn that we had a new faith suddenly
    • neither parent wants to purchase a full set of clothes but in my arrangement no clothes but what I wore to school that day are going back and forth. Thus formal events, weddings, holidays become a problem because no one really has the dress clothes for the kid
    • just normal family stuff fucking sucks… one Friday Dad takes me with his girlfriend and her daughter and I forget who else for someone's birthday to a big rib joint Ribbit or one of those 1980s style… Well, at Mom's we had just gone vegetarian. I didn't eat that night…
    • there is no kids social life, there is no easy dating for the parents.
    • sports are impossible because each parent is on their own wavelength…
    • similar to how I came home to a new religion, same thing with the stepfamily, Mom was dating him on the off week. I think I met my stepsisters maybe 3 times before they moved into our home and a year later we would move to be closer to his work
    • at least for me… I still (I'm 42 now) hear from each family how much I look like the other parent and their family. I was not Italian enough for my Italian family, I was never WASP enough to fit in with my Episcopalian white family
    • so many grandparents: dads dad, moms mom, moms moms boyfriend… stepfather: mommom & poppop… stepmom's: I called her father just by his name and her mom was grandmom
    • so many parents and ex spouses, family: mom, dad, stepmom, stepdad, stepdad's ex-wife and her new boyfriend and dropping off my stepsisters with them periodically for weekends and Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas day, before easter… stepmom's ex-husband who meet at 19 during sisters wedding in Montana… Stepmom's ex-husband's wife, their kids… And now stepsisters husband, his mom, his father, his mom's boyfriend, his mom's mom, his father's new wife, his siblings and their kids… Stepmom's 4 living siblings, my uncle and his "friend", my auntie And her second husband, my 2nd auntie who ran off with 1st aunties husband and whose kids had to do visitation between their mom and their dad and his girlfriend their aunt…
stepbrother I don't meet for 3 years, but at stepmom's place I slept in his room growing up, not my own

There's a newer arrangement that is more common now: one home, kids live there, parents switch out every other week and sometimes share an apartment or have place with friends/family for off week. this seems like it is better as kids get to do sports, theater, go to classmates' parties, they have all their clothes, theres centralization of school books, assignment tracking or calendars… Christmas is not split where Christmas Eve is in one home and Christmas morning you have an awkward handoff with stepsisters family and then off to Dads… It seems much more stable for the kids and has less of the pitfalls to their ability to form stable local friendships, probably makes finding a second spouse and having stepfamily much more awkward

49:41 the geeky giggle of pure joy in this moment is the least,
in-control, of his own presentation I’ve seen in him and I love it! I couldn’t care less about performing, but I envy enjoying anything this much!

re the shuttling back and forth every 2 weeks to custodial parents – I had an extended family member who as a child complained at one point as she grew older about the shuttling back and forth and I was on her side – I was like "when does she get to decide how and where to spend her time" (especially so she could develop stable friendships and social life as her own person as this discussion touches on). It does seem very selfish of the parents at some point.
