Simon Phillips Teaches Double Bass Drumming (Full Masterclass)

Drumeo | May 31, 2026

From the Drumeo vault… Simon Phillips teaches double bass drumming!

Known for his legendary work with Jeff Beck, The Who, Toto, Judas Priest, and countless other artists, Simon is widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Years ago, he filmed a series of videos with Drumeo for the YouTube channel, along with a full Musora course called “Elevate Your Drum Sound”.

You can check out the course here:

This final unreleased course dives into Simon’s unique approach to double bass drumming — covering ambidexterity, foot technique, control, and the practice methods he used to develop speed, power, and consistency behind the kit.

Throughout the masterclass, Simon breaks down a variety of exercises designed to strengthen both feet and improve overall bass drum coordination. Whether you’re working on endurance, precision, or independence, there’s a ton here to explore.

Take your time with the exercises, stay consistent, and most importantly — have fun practicing!

    I'm a lefty…always played right-hand kit..quit for about a year…always led left-foot…when I started up again, led right foot…now both, depending on what I'm playing

"I find it quite stunning" How humble! If he only knew that those of us who could lead on the right would trade that for 99.99% of the things he can do that the rest of us can't

This is a masterclass. What would also be helpful is some instruction about foot movement from hi-hat to left kick pedal. For example, some drummers will actually rest the left pedal's beater against the drum head (with left foot on the kick pedal) in between the times when they need to play double-pedal patterns. They appear to do this because the process of moving the left foot back and forth between hi-hat and left kick pedal is too challenging when the double-pedal patterns come in fast succession. It might not be common, but it's definitely being done, and it suggests that decisions about moving the left foot between hi-hat and kick pedal are being made on a case-by-case basis. So, if an expert like Simon provided some guidance about when to move the left foot, it'd be appreciated.

OK, this makes me feel better, I am right handed but left foot lead and always felt bad about it, unfortunately I also left hand lead which creates all manner of problems rolling down the kit…

Me and a fellow drummer mate were introduced to Simon after a drum clinic many years back, lovely chap Simon, gave us the time of day. He won’t remember but it meant a lot to us 🙂 cheers all, Stotty , ps my mate hero worshipped Simon but was drunk and told Simon he loved him, so maybe he would remember lol

I've been doing stuff like this for a decade now with double bass and switching leads. Ambidexterity is the goal. Equalize dominant sides for maximum freedom!

Yes. Just start slow and build up. Walk before running. I always wanted to play at the speed that my heroes played, when I was young and then realised why they play so good and smooth. It's dedication and gradual practise.
I loved the way he laughed when starting at 50bm.
Simon is such a great drummer!
