Yeah, this is what you see with my favorite singer/songwriter Aurora, she writes every song on her albums but there's almost always one or two people attached to it besides her.

Still waiting for any tips on how to songwrite that I mistakenly thought this video would have…… literally zero insights into the actual art of songwriting lol….. crazy how buddy has a patreon of people paying him to make videos that could be summed up in 1 stentence…. like this one for instance coulda just been "most artists don't write their own songs". I can see it being for discussion purposes but man you gotta change tha title.

Sylvester Stallone actually blew my mind. There's many levels to it. I've understood that most famous people are sell outs. Not the best way to say it but a lot of their beginning stuff is better and they flake off because why try anymore? Unless you're passionate about it. It does make life easier. I'll never be rich.

Kendrick Lamar isn't credited as a producer on To Pimp A Butterfly, Damn, or Good Kid, Maad City, so he had virtually no hand in making the music. I view artists like Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West as being "directors", like how film directors direct a whole bunch of creative people underneath them to make a movie. Kanye and Kendrick do not at all deserve the amount of acclaim they themselves receive (I see people calling Kendrick a great "musician" for example), when a lot of their greatness has to do with the people who work with/for them (in Kendrick's case, people like Thundercat, Sounwave, Pharrell Williams, etc.)

As a quote, unquote, singer songwriter I think the specifically Ur description of the first two examples perhaps underplays how messy the song writing process can be, even in my self there are rare songs that get handed down from the heavens in a flash of inspiration, but many more songs that are composite of parts of older songs and often with, if not the entire lyrics, words or phrases that come from strange places, you can only try your best to credit everyone but I assure you even Cohen or Eliot Smith don't write completely alone, besides any song you write gets changed at least a little in recording or production, even if it's as simple as lines being cut, that's a part of the writing process, hell sometimes even as late as the mixing process and some say u shld never mix ur own music lol

Whitneys super power truly was making any song her own.. even the songs she already made famous she would reinvent each time she sang live ❤.
Also Spirited was a great movie… I’m confused. Was it flagged just because the cover and name sound corny or do you not like Christmas movies? Because it was actually an A+ on the Christmas circuit

As an amateur, the whole expectation that singer-songwriters must also automatically be good or even outstanding musicians and especially instrumentalist always bugged the F out of me. I sing, always liked singing (and had a big learning curve in it over the years) and have been writing songs since I was a teenager. I'm good with poetry and language in general as well; Kate Bush is my alltime favourite artist. For years I was already writing my own songs (lyrics + melody and rhythm) and did not yet know how to play a single instrument, even though I grew up amongst musicians. Then in my early twenties I got an acoustic guitar from my mom (experienced singer) for my birthday because I had expressed wanting to learn guitar for it being a portable and diverse instrument that brings people together in musical ways on street corners, around campfires and just in everyday real life. Then I thought myself over multiple years how to play it and mostly just played and sang songs with chord progressions. Sure, I got better and better and could embellish my playing more over time, but at no point ever I could really confidently call myself either a musician or a guitarist… and the thing is that I had never even really wanted to in the first place! I always was a true singer-songwriter at heart: best at writing songs (not tunes or music, although I also have a knack for interesting melodies and sometimes chords) and singing them. My voice is not like those of the most legendary singers, but singing and writing songs is truly where my heart is at when it comes to music. And where exactly do people read "musician" or "instrumentalist" when they see "singer-songwriter"?! This is an extra burden placed on singer-songwriters exclusively, who already have burdened themselves with having to hone two crafts and skillsets for the sake of the epiteth they have taken on. It's like implicitly expecting models, who already have to be able to work a photocamera and walk runways and catwalks, to also just be good at dancing because that is also about showing one's body. Like, no: professional dancing and playing an instrument well are two entire crafts and skillsets that take a lot of training, practice and study to make one's own (and often even more training, practice and maybe even study to learn to combine playing certain instruments with singing at the same time and doing both well) and not just add-ons that are easily incorporated with the fundamental skillset. Rant over.

Rock and punk is largely singer or band-written songs, I believe.

Maybe this is snobbish to say but i feel like culturally we as a society should recognize the difference between singer songwriters and people who just buy their songs from other artists. like we should recognize people who write and produce their own music as something more artful rather than just singing it and being done effort-wise for their career.

In order to prove the doubters wrong, Taylor Swift wrote every song on her third album entirely by herself and was the executive producer (all at the age of 19). So yeah I think it shows that if she wanted to make an album with no collaborators or cowriters, she could.

Taylor Swift often releases voice recordings of the first draft of her songs, and I think this is a really smart and tactical way to establish that you are the main songwriter and that the final product is just a more refined version of your original product. Like sure, Jack and Aaron may be credited as writers on her songs, but when you listen to the first draft (which is usually her singing over a piano or guitar) you can hear that they have mainly just contributed to the production or made slight tweaks here and there, but the lyricism is her own. Idk, I think it's a smart way to prove you are a songwriter.

Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, and Hozier, are still singer-songwriters. you can put them in a room with an instrument and they'll come out with a full song. the other people credited are producers. they often get credit because songwriting includes: lyrics, melody, structure and chord schemes. it's rare that a producer had no input on any of that. But if you look at taylor swift's most recent album, for example, there are 6 tracks written without the producer getting any credit. these artists very much can write all alone.
