the spectacular irony of this episode taking its sweet sweet time to go up is not lost on me. oh btw it’s Vinyl Monday’s 5th anniversary.

I have always liked CSN(& sometimes Y), but have never quite loved them. Still, as usual, this was an excellent overview. I think failed to comment on your Donovan episode, but I'll say here now, as a huge Donovan admirer, it was excellent. Same for Pet Sounds and Revolver. Even as old as I am, I still often learn something that I did not know here. Well done!

You got an album and you don't remember where or how…. I lost over half my collection of albums and singles (lots of rare stuff, limited edition, first editions…. And I have no idea where they went or how I lost them…. Dammit. I'm enjoying rebuilding it though – even if some aren't replaceable. Anyway, just got to say, I think this channel is amazing, so well presented , so well researched . Thanks for rekindling my love for music, especially vinyl.

Camden's "E-Centre" (a huge music stadium that always came with a changing corporate sponsor in its title and one they never actually bothered giving a real name to!) was a place I went to 3 times in the mid-late 1990s. Each time I took my Dad with me, and our seats got better each time, from right rear to left 10th row and finally, 6th row CENTER. When the place opened, they were so desperate to make their money back, that for a few years, every show was a double-bill. NOT a headliner with a warm-up act, TWO top acts back-to-back, and often, 2 bands that had totally-different audiences, and had no business being on the same bill together.

The 1st of those 3 times we went was in the summer of 1995. The 1st act up was CHICAGO. Dad didn't really care for "rock" bands, but he liked CHICAGO, as they had a horn section, so they were the closest thing you could find to an older "Big Band". In fact, we saw them together 3 times over the years, in 1978, 1995, and 1997.

Well, in 1997, the 2ND band was CROSBY, STILL AND NASH. Dad said he was ready to go home after CHICAGO was done, but I told him, hey, look, I PAID for these tickets, just relax, and consider the 2nd half of the night the "educational" part of the evening. I think we both enjoyed the band, although I only knew 4 of their songs (and Dad knew none of them).

In fact, when CHICAGO was done… HALF THE AUDIENCE left and went home!!! And, I swear, HALF the audience that saw CS&N had skipped CHICAGO and arrived just in time for the 2nd half. Isn't that NUTS???

The thing that really stuck in my head during that set was… not long before it, I'd seen a VH-1: BEHIND THE MUSIC episode about David Crosby. And based on the way he'd RELENTLESSLY abused his body with drugs FOR DECADES until finally getting a heart transplant… the main thought in my head was, this guy was a COMPLETE ASSHOLE, and DIDN'T DESERVE to still be breathing. But, there he was, up on that stage, apparently, miraculously, having finally, after all those decades, gotten his damned life back together again. SHEESH.

I like "Marrakesh Express". I don't remember what the other ones were.

    😄

Sixties Art Major — As a fan of the Hollies, Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield, plus a reader of Crawdaddy, Downbeat, Creem, and then-elusive Rolling Stone Magazine at the time, I was alert to the rumors of these three highly-creative people making new music. (I will skip my attention to this trio's other former bandmates — there sure were a lot of things going on!)
This album was extremely welcome to me, and I was a persistent advocate of the disc, with a growing cadre of others on my side. These songs on "Crosby, Stills and Nash reflected our lives and aspirations with music that seemed to fly in new skies — from ideas that had only been hinted-at in previous records. It was the sounds of musical possibilities that spoke to me and my peer-group, on the threshold of adulthood.
Congratulations on the depth and feeling of your review, Abby — handling the foreground and background stories about this album are much like picking up high-voltage live-wires that you've managed to carry and lay aside safely.

I love the background you put into these. You answered that last question perfectly. It was a very comforting album during an exceptionally difficult period (I'm a Vietnam era veteran). It's always been one of my favorites.

This Abigail Overview is outstanding! ~ "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Helplessly Hoping" and "You Don't Have to Cry" are the three tracks that make this album. While I do enjoy listening to the entire set, it is the Stephen Stills material that pulls me in. Call me crazy, but those three songs would have been standouts without Crosby or Nash. There were many good harmony singers in Laurel Canyon.
