The Aerosmith song wasn't an Aerosmith song anyway; it was a Diane Warren song.

To be fair, rock bands can be accused of being ‘samey’ now they’re crucified for trying something different! This doesn’t mean that the hair metal ‘power ballads’ aren’t generally awful.
I don’t like ‘More than Words’ very much but two voices and an acoustic guitar is not, to me, a power ballad.

70s Lynyrd Skynyrd (one of my absolute favourite bands) do 3 songs that I think are some of the best ballads ever done: Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone and Comin' Home. And as for a song that I absolutely hate which perhaps could be considered a ballad : Toto – Africa (is it a ballad though? to me it sounds like the lyrics were lifted off a tourist brochure championing the merits of the dark continent)

Ahh yes, FM synthesis and the Yamaha DX7 "Full Tines" patch. All the other synth makers either copycatted that or sampled it.

Bridge over troubled water is top 10 of the ballads of all time. No doubt.

Maybe if you had been young in the 80s it might have been different, but I guess you were in your 40s at the time, so you were probably settling down with the wife and the Audi.

None of us control what we like and dislike. We only control making an effort to get an acquired taste, but even then we don't control the outcome; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and either way we have no idea why. So, explaining why we like or dislike something is bollocks because it's always a rationalization, not a true explanation.

Wonder what your view is if Genesis ballads. There are loads, not just from the 80s but from More Fool Me onwards. I personally can't stand Your Own Special Way. Not the song as such but that half arsed keyboard solo. The beginnings of Genesis decline?

When I was driving in my car at night last weekend, a ballad type song came on the radio, which sounded very familiar, but I couldn't say what song it was until the chorus. I kind of liked the beginning of the track. Then I realized it was I Want to Know What Love is by Foreigner. I was a bit shocked because I too always thought it was a terrible track. Well, compared to the atrocious Wind of Change it is brilliant, compared to Wichita Lineman it's not great but ok. Nothing worth skipping the radio channel for (FM radio in my part of Germany is just awful, the chances you would find something better than even Foreigner are slim).

There are songs that I would probably never listen to individually, but I don't tend to skip tracks if I'm listening to an entire album straight thru, especially those albums that have a cohesive sound, theme, story, or concept. Granted, ballads don't always manage to fit in with that type of cohesiveness.
