One of the coolest things about Bonzo was his ability to change things up night in, night out. When you listen to lots of bootlegs (especially successive nights) you can hear these different rolls and fills that he throws in. It sounds as if he did it once (the roll), loved it, and then tried to incorporate it into different songs, at different tempos, yet it's the same drum fill. A great example of this is Mobile, AL 5/13/73. He does this same specific, syncopated snare/kick/tom/kick/tom/kick/tom fill in Celebration Day, Over the Hills and Far Away, No Quarter, Dazed and Confused and probably other songs I'm not remembering right now. Next night in New Orleans, it was on to something else. Bonzo will ALWAYS be my favorite rock drummer. So inventive, so powerful, yet he had such finesse.

Bonzo was the greatest. My favorite is "Fool in the Rain". It would have been so great to have seen him in later years. Died way too young. Wonderful job man. This was a pleasure to watch.

One of thousand of young drummers in the 1970's that lived and breathed John Bonham. I spent hours on most days working on album sides (if you don't know that, you are missing something) – learning the drum parts of Bill Brufford, Barriemore Barlow, Keith Moon (The best Keith Moon style drummer, until his passing) But John was above all, by every measure. Not just the thunder, the power, but the subtlety 99% of people miss. He really had no rock idols, since not one was at his level, his idols were Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Joe Morello. When I saw Zeppelin twice in 75 and 5 times in 77, it was a religious experience, nothing less. I ran into the 1st gate at Madison Square Garden, because I knew… just KNEW he would have gotten a new drum kit / Drum set. I am not sure why I knew, or how, but I absolutely KNEW and was anxious to see. My brother thought I was nuts, but in I ran, and came out saying "Stainless! He's got a stainless steel set!

I've never considered Bonham an influence on my playing, but I always listened to and admired Led Zeppelin. I have no doubt that he influenced me more than I realize, whether it be through listening to Zeppelin for years or hearing other drummers heavily influenced by him (like Dave Grohl for instance).

Has anyone thought of comparing John Bonham's style to his son Jason's style, particularly his similarities and differences? That would be an interesting study!
