How to undo the damage of sitting all day | The Gray Area
We’ve all heard that “sitting is the new smoking,” but the research behind that phrase goes much deeper. How bad is sitting for you really?

In this episode guest host Bryan Walsh is joined by Manoush Zomorodi — host of NPR’s TED Radio Hour and author of Body Electric — to explore how our sedentary, screen-filled lives are reshaping our physical health from the neck down. Manoush shares findings from her own clinical trial, where she partnered with scientists to determine the minimum amount of movement the human body actually needs to function.
Whether you’re a desk jockey or a parent concerned about screen time, this conversation offers a practical, science-backed approach to reclaiming your physical health in a digital world.

How about standing on your feet all day? Guess what? Many more of us are harmed by not being able to balance sitting and standing because we are FORCED TO STAND.

In my opinion its called gravity. We live on a planet called Earth 🌎 and there is a force being exerted on us 24/7 called gravity. If you don't exercise or stretch, this thing called gravity will weigh you down, physically and metabolicly. As for concentration or focus, human beings have created this thing called "reading". If your having problems with focus you should try it, and you're really feeling froggy you should read out loud.

It could’ve been a sharp, five-minute video. Vital. Perfect.
Instead? 42 minutes 'podcast'. Why? God, why?!

I work on a computer all day and purposefully started doing a morning walk and evening walk outside for about 15-20 minutes each (30-40 mins a day) and I try to break up my work into 30 minute sprints so I can get up or move or stretch. It's helped my mood and tiredness so much!

The research actually aligns really well with the “pomodoro” productivity technique that I have been using for years. Pair the two and you’ll be productive and healthy!

I CLICKED SO FAST!! As a massage therapist I see the effects of sitting too much every single day. That neck or lower back pain is coming from your shoulders and hips. Sitting isn't resting, It's causing the problem!! Sleep, stretch and move your body. The stretch that hurts, the one you're not good at is the one you need to do!
Our bodies are constantly trying to achieve homeostasis, balance. So when we sit too much our shoulders/neck roll forward and our hips lock in that hinged position and that becomes our resting point. Then when you try to stand or move your posterior muscles are all straining to hold your body up straight, as you age in that position your head will move further forward until you can't look up or raise your arms and your hips will get so locked you wont be able to walk or stand. That is not a normal part of aging it is caused by our lifestyle slowly year after year.

I have come to enjoy this podcast, and I've learned lots of useful ideas and heard lots of interesting perspectives. This is hands down the most useful information I think I've heard on it to date.

I have a Pomodoro timer on my desk set to 30 minutes that I use and a cheap timex watch set to 5 minutes on my wrist. Timers beeping all over the place.

I'm sorry (just watched a few minutes in), the idea that "screens" are the main cause for sitting still too much is perhaps true but don't forget the more virtues activities, like reading, requires sitting and can easily cause bad posture in people.

Having a job that requires me to sit for hours, I used to find little tricks to make my body move. I wouldn’t keep a tumbler or glass at my desk, so I’d have to get up and walk a bit whenever I wanted to drink. I also made sure to drink a lot, which meant I’d have to walk again to go to the toilet.
But somehow, the flow of work makes those simple breaks difficult. Once you take a break, it can be hard to regain your focus, so you end up thinking you need to finish what you’re doing first before getting up. And because you don’t want to stop while you’re “in the zone,” you end up sitting for much longer than you realize.
That's a dilemma.
