French hère. The US in 2026 is like Russia 25 years ago when Putin was elected. The democracy is always proportionnal with the liberty of the press and the judiciary system. The Trump administration has beginning to censure the press who ask the embarrasing question. The judiciary system of US ? If you are a billionnaire, you can buy the best lawiers and do all the abominations. The politician of the country are corrupt corrupt. It's now a rogue state. Even when you havent personally been a victim of abuse or SA from a man it impacts your life so much as a woman. Everywhere you go you have to worry about safety, its so draining mentally and theres so many opportunities I miss out on because of fear. I wish i was less anxious, i wish i could go out alone at night and not be scared.

I don't think Trump is just a big baby. He's trying to run the U.S. like a company. What company would bother paying for PR that doesn't hue to the company line? If you plan to run the world, soft power only creates unreasonable expectations of good behavior and then disillusionment. For someone like Trump, better the world not expect better of him.

About the Noam Chomsky thing, I was never particular fan of him, but however his books and writings do have merit regardless of Jeffrey Epstein thing being a pedo-bear. As there is a saying, you can hate the artist, but don't hate the art.

Soft power isn't solely used by America and it's hardly a new concept; only the term is new. It can genuinely be a useful tool to help even out the playing field for other countries. But it's not perfect, and can sometimes also hide and omit important information, obscuring it in order to better the image of a nation.

@13 min in: instead of Noam Chomsky, it is possible for Naomi Klein's work in "The Shock Doctrine" could be extended to include the way media is used to sway public opinion through how people react to news of tragedy and how we scapegoat.

I'm Danish and in my thirties, and it's wild to see the real time dismantling of the soft power of the US. My country joined the "coalition of the willing" after 9/11. We lost a number of troops and many came back and live with disabilities brought on by their experiences. Trump has imposed tariffs, threatened to take over Greenland and mocked us for being a bad ally. Now he's expecting us to join his new illegal war in the middle east? πππ
