Stephen Colbert Breaks Down His Approach To Comedy and Improv | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out
Mike Birbiglia | February 7, 2026
Stephen Colbert, host of The Late Show, shares with comedian Mike Birbiglia his approach to hosting the show, as well as what he learned from studying improv with Del Close. The two share some laughs and some wisdom in this clip from Colbert’s January 2025 appearance.
The good aspect of Steven being canceled is what will follow. He is so incredibly talented and authentic,. And soon. all this will be free from any corporate chains and boundaries. I was sad, when the news hit, but it just gonna get better. In this day and age, an exceptional person like Colbert does not need a TV show to reach people just to get censored. Now I'm thrilled of what will follow!
I’ve been a fan of Colbert for 20 years. I watched this interview before and am watching it again. I just caught Mike’s comparison of stand-up comics to pastors and teachers and that explains my own attraction. I listen to comedy podcasts exclusively, but not in the hope of catching jokes. I’m always approaching the interviews as learning experiences, as if there’s something I can use in my own work. I’m a high school teacher teaching very serious subjects, but I’ve learned a lot from comedians about how to capture attention quickly and engage an entire room. Interviews like this are more helpful than even teacher workshops and seminars on classroom management.
So, Steve was raised by a warlock? Pentagrams make good stagecraft? Wow, I get the Catholicism now!!!! (tic) "it's a ricochet off the left field, ball girl's helmet, going right at his cranium!"
Im with you Stephen. When they announce your name and you step up to the plate, You need to lead with the Date that brung you. Even though the ball may be in the other court, its the quarterback that ultimately gets the hole in one. Comedy is like a metaphor. You may take the crowd to the horse trough, but you can never make them want more. That would be like non- sensical.
This whole interview had Mike pausing to learn a lesson every few minutes. Absolute master of his craft and such a brilliant man, Stephen Colbert. Mike is pretty great too.

A lot of comedians think that the audience is the BATTER.

Remember, catchers call the pitches, and they also get unlimited mound visits. So be careful with this analogy.

When he said, “I often drink-in the room,” all I could picture is the Neil Brennan noise and words popping up saying, “Drinks at work.”

Colbert dresses like he’s always either on the way to or back from the country club
