Love and Basketball… and the Black Gender Wars
Love and Basketball is one of the most beloved movies of my youth. However, it seems like it has fallen into the status of a movie that is looked at as out of touch with modern sensibilities. This is a fair criticism, but I think it’s a bit too simple. So in this episode I breakdown what made this movie good then and why it’s still relevant now.
Also just a heads up… this almost didn’t make it to yall on time cause the bots were on my behind. If you want to see the intended version of this video please look out for it on nebula very soon. Check the Connecting the Manosphere video for a link to sign up.

Thank you for breaking the movie down. I recently rewatched and noticed all the subtle gender references so it’s good to have a video that expounds on this. I’m even more of a fan of Love and Basketball now!

I didn't know you'd made this video before today. Ironically I was talking to another content creator about Q and Monica's relationship and how it wasn't actually one sided it was just time predominantly from her perspective, but it showed that Q was invested equally in their relationship.

First off great vid I always like to hear emotionally mature mens views and I never heard a guy actually talk about Quincys family in deep dive from his emotional stand point.
I dont think it was a cop out that she stopped playing basketball because of him I think in that era with women in sports even today, she couldnt balance the two because she might have been rejected or asked about her sexuality.
She is a dominate personality she might have had stigmas that she could only be vulnerable with Quincy when dating and vice versa which is why he also fell out love for ball because he knew she is the one that would be ok with him not playing and she lead the relationship anyway but he only dated women that fell in line with how he was raised. They balanced each other out.
Basketball bonded them emotionally and they never seperated life outside of basketball until college with their emotional baggage and trauma but not in a constructive way.
Now I do think she should have explored more with her life before going back to him. I'm pretty sure she came across plenty of fine men during her playing days.

Forgive me I just found your channel so I am going back in time to watch some videos. The part when you discussed Monica choosing basketball (remember Quincy's exclamation "You would never have to!"). I don't think there was anything in the movie that convinced us this is true. Allowing women to see your excitement about their romantic advances toward you (in front of your girl no less) would always breed a disrespectful environment for Monica. That is a mark against Quincy in convincing me he'd jump out the window (or quit basketball) for Monica. Taking that hoe to Burger King was also blatantly disrespectful. I do agree he is not F boy, but certainly a bad boyfriend.

Blah, blah, blah!!! I love this movie, because in my opinion it shows how in the end they both were willing to give up their good life for the sake of their love for one other.
Love has its ups and downs, and they clearly still had feelings for one another; her more than him.

By the way don't mind my comment spam, been following a while but didn't really nicely sit and binge your videos until this month.
So i been enjoying digesting them properly for all the ones i hadnt watched aince i originally discovered your videos in passing via Foreign man in a foreign land and enjoyed them but never really went back to enjoy the whole catalogue.
Keep up the great work 👊🏿💜, definitely appreciate your takes as someone whos in their mid thirties its always enjoyable to come across black men older than me who are abke to discuss so many topics without going into that realm of chasing extremes that we often see these days with people just tryna make polarizing content where its always either extremely positive or extremely negative etc

Monica's dad is a banker. Basically executive banker's are never home. As a black man he prolly putting in 60 to 70 hours a week. Notice he does show up to HER games video camera in hand. He is about average dad for the 70's and 80's especially one that has to crank out thise super hours to survive the executive ranks. She didn't drop her dreams because she got married. She dropped her dreams when she got PREGNANT. In other words she chose mother hood OVER her career. Not marriage.

Let me counter a core notion that frames almost the entirety of the "Quincy is refuse" argument.
You comment that Quincy's struggle is "are they into me, or what they think I am"… which is the inverse of Monica's struggle. Monica and Quincy are easily seen as the closest to each other… but what Monica has to struggle with is feeling the connection with someone that doesn't see her. Quincy doesn't see her, romantically, until she sheds her tomboy visage. Cue her (their?) first time.
We time jump to college, were her reconnecting with her tomboy ways pushes his "crisis of masculinity". Her having an identity, wants and needs, causes him to question her commitment to him. Inevitably leading to their break up.
We time jump again… and fast forward a bit through the 4th quarter.
What Quincy is struggling with here, is that he recreated his parents' relationship… a "pick me" who hitched her cart to his high status wagon… and the realization that his isn't the high status male that he appears to be. He knows that the relationship is predetermined.
Leading to the final nail in Quincy is refuse coffin. He; again, is outsourcing his uncertainty onto Monica. The question of infidelity from earlier is brought full circle, given that he entangles with Monica, without properly exiting the relationship with Tyra Banks's character.
Throughout the entire movie, Quincy is an albatross on Monica's journey of self discovery. Her every major step in finding herself, growing and adapting as an adult, is accomplished without Quincy. Quincy doesn't do anything to support Monica's journey, while demanding that she support his journey above her own.

The internet is overrated. I bin on youtube for 10 years and what I see here isn't what I see in real life. So that means 90% of the black women on youtube are capping. They are still dating black men. But when I get on youtube you would think that black women don't even date black men anymore. What I'm saying is don't believe the hype. Because the hype isn't reality. If it was I would agree. The truth is 5 % of black men are bashing black women on the internet. So what are the other 95 % doing? The truth is 5 % of black women are bashing black men on the internet. So what are the other 95 % doing? I watched Ohprah Lie to black women on tv and she set the ball rolling by telling black women they would never get married. And we know how powerful Oprah was at that time. Now we know she was working with the higher-ups the whole time. But black women still took the bate. Because there is a much bigger plan in play. And if were not smart enough to stop this fire of Illusion. The illusion will one day become a reality. And black love will be lost forever. And you know America would love to see that happen.
