This is sad. The US government has been punishing the Native Americans for 100s of years and it sickens me that I have some Native American blood in me and the government needs to give back the lands that these Native American people had for centuries. Plus the Trail of Tears back in the 1800s should've never happened. Shame on the American government for what they did to these poor people. What did the Native American do to the government? The government needs to stop making excuses. To all the Native American people I'm sorry for the US government did to all of you. None of you deserve to treated the way you did or get your lands taken away. That's wrong. My heart aches for all you.

Algonquin here, when we found out Walter Plecker called some of our people "Negro" who were not on reservations, showed the deception of the United States.

Sounds like Puerto Rico that nation has the Gov.'s foot on their necks. The natives are the poorest . Like Hawaian natives.

May the white buffalo be a sign of better times ahead. Tear down the dams, restore the waters, tear down the walls that prevent our neighbors from getting the access to things we take for granted, let us return control of land management, specifically in regards to fire management/prevention, regenerating soil health, & sequestering carbon via indigenous practices that have 1000s of years of knowledge behind them, while admitting ourselves that the way we have done things these last few hundred years have not been working. We have been working against nature, when it is begging us to pay attention & work effortlessly with it!

as a New Zealander, i was never taught the history or experiences of Native Americans in school. ever since, i have taken the time and energy to learn about Native Americans on my own and i have always held a great respect for them. 💙

It's a shame that today indigenous people never understand the situation of current and future agendas and they're failed to rise up against the colonizers,
The generation is poor ,clueless and confused 😕 and homeless drug addicted can't fight the fascist imperialist dictator.
Your population is dwindling in 10 to 20 year ahead the population completely vanished I fear of losing another culture.

The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy did, indeed, organize and promote peace between their constituent tribes, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca (later, Tuscarora added) but the news wasn't so welcome for the neighboring Lenape and Huron Peoples whom the subjugated and periodically massacred.

I love teaching people about South American native History. Around here there's this myth of how the land was mostly unsettled and wild… when in fact there were literal millions around. Treatise breaking is the same all around the American continent, and it's never been possible to hold sons accountable to the promises of their fathers, or sometimes even those fathers accountable to their own promises… I usually refer to colonisation as "the invasion", and I always tell stories from the native point of view. Lots of "heroic pioneers" turn out pretty bad in those versions.
In my state wars against local tribes were waged for over 200 years, until all organised resistance was obliterated through death or enslavement. The most famous of these wars was actually won by a native confederacy! Settlers had to beg the Catholic Church to broker a treatise because their capital was under siege! Another broken treatise, of course. Smaller hidden populations remained in remote areas until the 19th century, though, occasionally accepting and incorporating black fugitives from slavery (like my grandma's tribe would do far up north, arguably the first "reservated" population in the country), while some, seeing which way the wind was blowing, chose to stick around settlers and were ultimately absorbed.
Nowadays the only tribal village in town is a multi-ethnic tribal embassy established less than 30 years ago. It's a wonderful place to visit, and there's so much to learn by just chatting with people when they decide to hold open events. It's impossible not to love it… unless you exhibit some serious character flaws.

I appreciate what you've explained here. As a white person, I feel a lot of anger and shame towards the other whites in history who have represented the worst of themselves in how they've treated Native Americans. Thank you for being here. I'll keep watching so I can keep learning. 🙏🏻

Why ppl use the term 'Native American' even though the continent habitated way before it was named as America? Should they be called as 'Turtle Island natives'?

What is a democracy? Lets ask a better question? Would you be better off under Russia and china as a slave with no land?? 😮 or keep trying to sell out America where you actually owe land ? 😮😮

I appreciate PBS adding Native perspective content, but y'all left out enslaved African peoples when discussing the Trail of Tears. The "5 Civilized Tribes" legally adopted African chattel slavery and dragged the families they enslaved on the Trail… often forcing them to carry loads when the animals could not.

Inuit here, we were spared the worst because settlers don’t like ice plains and tundra. Sadly murderers do.
Either way, we’re honored to have our lands become home to the world. Just remember it’s not anyone’s place to decide who does and doesn’t belong here; I’m not interested in a victim mentality, but I am interested in people who aren’t from here accepting that their place on this continent is as justified as anyone else’s who isn’t native. Be the best person you can be, and you’re more than welcome in our home- even if you falter, such is the nature of being human.
Humility, respect, and patience are great ways to find inner peace my friends, and always avoid resentment.

I was travelling through New Brunswick, Canada, in a town named Dalhousie, I believe. Quaint town but sadly my guide felt the need to warn me of a nearby reservation. His words really bothered me. He heavily implied alcoholic and aggressive tendencies, and I think he really believed that those on the reservation simply refused to work so they deserve to live the way they do. Others I've heard fully believe that Native Americans want to live as they currently do! I laugh. You can be happy and find fulfillment in nearly any situation if stuck in it long enough! It doesn't mean you're satisfied or even content!

So many animal species have been wiped out by the human species that it does not surprise me they tried to do the same to a race and culture that understood deep ecology so well
