GenXGrownUp | June 8, 2026

Atari is making another big move — this time acquiring Hipster Whale, the studio behind Crossy Road. Is this a smart mobile gaming push, or another strange twist in Atari’s modern comeback story?

This week on Bit By Bit, we’re also looking at a new Toy Story retro collection, our first look at the ModRetro M64 FPGA N64, rumors of a low-cost Sega handheld with removable carts, Evercade’s take on older gamers being underserved, a wild Wolfenstein 3D Atari 2600 demake, a reported Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee remaster, and the latest shakeup in the retro gaming scaler fight.

Grab your coffee, settle in, and let’s get into the week’s biggest retro gaming stories. 🕹️

I know the cartridges are a little large, but I would do cartwheels if SEGA released a cart-based handheld for newly published games that could also play Genesis games. 16-bit is still the gold standard gaming experience for me. I'd love to have a new Street Fighter 2 for ex, with additional characters like Sakura, Mike Hagger, and Mika. Or a full-blown Fire Pro Wrestling with room to save a few hundred created wrestlers. Or maybe… 😁

Oh, so Atari is just desperate at this point. Probably explains all the licensed games(or rather licensed compilations) they've been doing.
EDIT: Actually that also explains Bubsy's latest comeback

I absolutely agree that I would far rather spend less on various different games or systems rather than sinking £100 into a so called AAA title. I still spend a significant amount of money each month on gaming and Blaze in particular have got a lot of my cash for their Evercade line of devices and carts. Thanks for another great spread of news George.

Thanks for the video, never think to watch these vids but it's a nice overview. A chapter for each story would be nice so you can skip the stories that don't interest you (but maybe it's a lot of work and if so understandably that's why you don't do it!). Cheers again.

A Sega Handheld similar to the Evercade would definitely be in my short list of potential items for me for BDay and Christmas this year for sure!
    Thanks so much George 👊🏻😎🕹️📺🥳

It's still amazing to be discussing Atari, Atari games and acquisitions in 2026. Atari has evolved in the last six plus years, they have a lot to offer in the form of games, hardware, collaborations and merchandise. Sega potentially releasing a handheld, one that plays cartridges no less, shows that Retro gaming is alive and well. Plus, it may explain why there has not been a Sega based cartridge with Evercade.
