I Finally Played FROGGER ’97 on PlayStation… It’s Rough
I have played plenty of Frogger over the years—but somehow, I had never played the 1997 Frogger reboot for the original PlayStation.
This time, I’m going in completely fresh to see how the simple arcade classic was transformed into a full 3D adventure. Unfortunately, it does not take long for the traffic, awkward controls, and questionable design choices to start taking their toll.
Come along as I play PlayStation Frogger for the very first time and discover whether this ambitious update can win me over—or leave me wishing the frog had stayed in the arcade.

I have never played this game and I thought it was only for PC. I am glad that you covered this game because at the time this came out, magazines were still dominating when it came to video game news as opposed to youtube videos that showed actual gameplay. I will always love the original but I don't have the patience for all of that trial and error and the limited view looks really frustrating.

I had this one on PC after I finally upgraded to a Win98 box in 1999. I enjoyed it well enough but never got anywhere close to finishing it. I do recall it being very difficult, and besides that, I also got Final Fantasy VII on PC, so my priorities were ordered otherwise, naturally. I do think it would've been a much better game if they'd gotten rid of the timer mechanic and just let you explore initially.

Man I had that on the playstation. At the time there was a run of old arcade classics that were being updated with new graphics. I got defender, missile command, battlezone, and then I got frogger. Yeah it wasnt all that great.

The Honey Bee Hollow level is crazy. The bees are so fast, you pretty much HAVE to be constantly moving, but you have no idea where you are supposed to go. I think this was a casualty of the early "unlimited continue" culture of gaming. Since they knew you had infinite lives, they basically figured they could be lazy in their level design by making part of the difficulty be that you HAD to die many times to learn a level before you could win. But maybe it is the old school classic arcade gamer in me, but I don't consider memory as a gaming skill. At least not in in this trial and error and then remember the errors aspect. I want my games to be just as possible to be won the first time I play versus the 100th time I play. Sure, there are patterns and other little tricks you learn from playing classic arcade games a bunch of times. But that is different from "You have to memorize the layout of the level because you can't see enough of it on screen."

There are a couple sequels that are way better. I believe there was a great Frogger on the Wii shop as well.

I did have this game in 97. I played it a lot with my younger brother we got half way or a little bit farther. I actually enjoyed the challenge of the game and yes I had the original game as well. I had a 2600 , 7800, Coleco vision, NES, gameboy, gameboy color, SNES, PSX, gameboy advance, Dreamcast, PS2 – PS4, Nintendo Switch, switch 2.

Are there any options in the game that allow you to change the time limit and the camera? Maybe?

I had this, I know I played it no idea how much from memory EVERY more modern frogger increased difficulty the 3d platforming one by Konami is moderately broken and cursed.

Based on your gameplay, I think this game had potential but as you noted about the limited view, this game would be better without any timers or perhaps an option to disable timers. I had never seen it before so thanks for broadening my horizons!

Haha! I’d forgotten about this game. I’m a millennial, so when I played this game with my brother I was likely around the same age you were with the 2600. We had so much fun with this one.

Great video Jon! I have this game in my retro library, but just noticed I don’t have it for my grandkids in my retro gaming area for them so I might pick up a second copy for them! Even though I’m a pretty hard-core fan of your OG gaming stuff with the older consoles that I grew up with also it’s nice to stray a little bit and try other consoles also! Thanks, I appreciate that! 👍🏻🕹️

This is where a gameshark would have come in handy. Kill that timer lol. I like the SNES version, though.

Great game but only racing 2-4 players. The racing games levels are much better than the 1 player levels.

You all suck at games. This is a good game. It is a hard game, it is not an impossible game. I think you've all had your hands held for too long with the games that have come out in the last 15+ years. I beat almost every level of this when I was 12. I can't imagine any of you playing a NES or SNES game 😂

Oh yes, the psx version of Frogger, I played this too, I bought it used for very cheap, man, this game is truly aweful, the camera and timer ruined it. Personally, for a newer 3D Frogger, I liked Frogger Returns on the Nintendo Wii, now that's fun!👍
