How To DESTROY a Band In 3 Albums

Guitar Meets Science | May 28, 2026

The Portishead Story. This week, we explore the band that sold two million copies, watched their sound get photocopied by every perfume ad in America, and then refused to make another record for eleven years — not because of drugs or lawsuits, but because they didn’t feel like it. When they finally came back, they made a record so strange their own fans didn’t know what to do with it. Three albums in thirty years. And they’re still not done with each other. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

That was a blast! I used to think I was a shitty Portishead fan because I didn’t know what they were up to. Thanks for making me feel better ❤ Gold again! Thank you for another awesome vid

Yeah, while Third is a departure from the black-hole dark odyssey that is Portishead–which I think is their best imho–I still love their last studio album. I love all three, but they are definitely very different shades (and parts of Third, radically different) of the same artist. Hunter may be my favorite Portishead song, definitely in contention, top five easy.

Portishead are the only artists that have made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. Glory box was the first track I heard, I went out the same day and copped the album. Wandering star still makes me tear up and grin like a loon, the hairs on my arms stand bolt upright. They're a masterclass in sonic creativity

thanks for reminding me how much i really loved their sound, so i will have to go again to listen to whatever they have on youtube, my records were stolen many years ago.
cheers from a 65yrs old new zealander.

I liked Third. Maybe Trip-Hop was out in the 2000s. I dig their experimental rock attempt. That is the problem with the industry here and over there, they don't share notes and pass info around for them to get more known. To be old enough to be on both ends of the Atlantic during that time. :/

One of their best anecdotes is how the made the scratches and needle jumps on Dummy.

They pressed recorded tacks to vinyl, then threw them on the floor and jumped on them. Put the record on a turntable and sampled it back into their desk / sampler.

    There’s probably a plugin for that now…

2 brilliant albums, and then a 3rd that is almost unplayable.

So many late nights in the 90s just listening to this band quietly with my thoughts, facing my demons, and wondering where life will lead. I miss those days.

@guitarmeetsscience I like your style. You have this "Gather 'Round the Campfire, Children, and Let Me Tell You a Tale" vibe. Your energy is somewhere between Grampa Simpson and Hank Hill, which is endearing. I like how you get to the meat of the story while revealing your personality throughout. Thank you for being the Record Keeper for 90's Alt. Rock Lore & Gossip. It is greatly appreciated.

10:26 my wife and I almost so close to almost went to see this tour in New York. It just seemed like a poor financial decision at the time. Now it seems like such a huge mistake not going. I don’t have a lot of regrets but that😢

i used to be in beak, so i've heard all this stuff firsthand, came here expecting more mythologising as peeps are wont to do but nah, this is all good accurate stuff! I think theres a common thing about bristolians, we don't like fuss or pomp that much so all the "industry" stuff is more-oft-than-not pretty unappealing

Of any band I have ever listened to, and consider a favorite, there is none that I would pay more money to go see than Portishead. Each album is like a bit of time travel as the mood, and feel, and take you to a different part of Beth’s (and my) life.

Third took a while for me to “get”. When it first came out, I found it to be such a departure from Dummy and Portishead that I just found it to be abrasive, then probably more than a year later, I put it on, and it hit me – musical and lyrical and life evolution. Could be that I finally had grown with it, and could argue (with nobody in particular) that Third is my favorite of their three albums. I absolutely love the first two, but they feel a bit more like me from yesterday, whereas Third feels much more present.

I really dig Geoff Barrow’s band, Beak>, as well. Nothing like Portishead.
