Mentally speaking, the United States never recovered from this war, especially in the South. So many betrayals and so many lives lost.

Lincoln’s political allies offered to write slavery into the US constitution if the South would accept high tariffs (which would help the north enormously but destroy the South.). The Corwin Amendment passed Congress and was ratified by 5 states. The South could have lived with an abolition of slavery (if owners were compensated) but not with high tariffs, which would have caused Europe to tariff them and lock them out of their market. The civil war was about tariffs, not slavery. The north never even offered to buy and free the slaves. This professor is speaking nonsense, but he has to if he wants to be a professor at his university. It is an American dogma.

Interesting how all of the comments are praising this podcast discussing slavery, but no mention of reparations?!!..do black people not deserve reparations for building the nation from the ground up?! 🧐🧐

July 31, 2026 at 10:32 am
I don't really like the whole "Lee had more casualties than Grant in the first fourteen months of the war" discourse beginning around the 55 minute mark. Of course he did. His battles during that timeframe involved a lot more troops. What happened in the first 14 months of the war, which takes us to September of 1862? By that point Lee has fought the Peninsula Campaign, which for the sake of simplicity we'll say he was commanding an average of 100,000 men against McClellan's 100,000 men, then he also fought Second Bull Run in which he had 50,000 men against Pope's 77,000. In that same timeframe, Grant has fought Belmont, Fort Henry, and Fort Donelson but in those three battles combined he was facing about 25,000 confederates. Then at Shiloh he had 67,000 men against 50,000 confederates. So we're talking about Lee facing a total of 177,000 Union men and Grant facing 75,000 Confederate men and saying "Lee had more casualties." No kidding. I disagree that Grant was a butcher, but that's just a really poor way to make that point.

No mention of reparations?!!…the US was built off the back of slavery. I don’t get how you can discuss the causes of the civil war and skip over addressing how blacks need to be compensated for building the US the nation it is today..

This guy dismissed Shelby Foote as an apologist when all Shelby ever did was objectively explain why southerners felt the way they did within the context of the times. Never defending “The Lose Cause”. Also, this war was absolutely inevitable because of money. $3bn in human assets and a complete change in economic structure and industry needed to replace that if gone.
Gary’s motional spazzing out was kind of shocking and proved several times over he himself was the less objective one.
Otherwise, great conversation. Thank goodness Meade was an idiot and Lee was great so that Emancipation had the perfect opening to happen.
With love from,
A fella from The South

I think the south actually won. They didn't know what they wanted, and so fought for slavery, when what they really wanted (and got) was white supremacy. If the slaves were white, slavery would have ended years before. It survived as the most convenient (an profitable) form of white supremacy. Lincoln and men like him would have voted for a constitutional amendment ending slavery and codifying white supremacy in the constitution. Thank God the planter class were too stupid to see it.

18:14 One of the reasons Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation to keep Britain from supporting the Confederacy because they wanted the cotton for their textile industry that was so lucrative in Britain so Abraham Lincoln did this as a political move because Britain could not support a country that supports slavery most of the higher British elite where in favor of the Confederacy most of British lower class citizens were not the ruling class depends upon election votes and they would not get support from the voters if they sided with the Confederacy Britain saw it as an opportunity to break apart the United States and make them weaker

Have I never heard anyone discuss the number of former slaves who died during and following the Civil War. It would seem to me that millions of people who are ignorant to the ways of the world suddenly moving off of giant farms, where they are worked hard, but also cared for would lead to quite a few deaths

The most important thing here that is nowhere to be seen nor anywhere near the picture is the fact that the person who is telling the story, the guest in the show, the young man who is most likely in the age group of people in their 70s-80s even, telling the story with his own and personal moral era framework of everything, and the story is about the most significant war in the history of the founding of the United States country, basically he was not even born yet those days and neither were me who’s writing this comment, nor you who’s reading it, so none of these most crucial determining describing details are even mentioned, without the host of the show Lex Fridman briefly mentioning what era that was happening at during the initial part of the “Key Battles of the Civil War” chapter, and mainly the guest on this episode the one telling the story, appears to be completely clueless about the prospect of the moral landscape framing of it all and each respectively according to each other’s own personal lifetime.. clueless, and in our day and age, where the host of the show is the best on the expertise of robotics and human sociology and the intersection now between the two, should be able and willing to stand up and make these details written in bold characters because they are the determining criteria for the story of our lives in the make and development of civilisation and the progress of morality and civil communication and everything else… not a f*cking clue the story teller seems to even have ever cross his mind, and Lex on this episode to me seems to be on the brink of giving up entirely on humanity and the progress of the amicability of the introduction of technology to not just a third arm or leg or the sixth sense finally to be ever achieved, and instead are just letting himself go along with the fake loving clicks he gets on being the shiniest of the objects around like his presented to us the public for information as his best friend, Joe Rogan who if ever had a pinch of real progress and positivity of humanity one day becoming eternal cyborgs, and himself if he ever had a tiny bit of that in the beginning which I wouldn’t know because I have never gave him enough of my time with his streams running on my devices to be able to analyse it probably, but appears to have completely given up anything anyway in exchange for the feelings the love clicks on his material produces his mind for picked and chosen favourite way to experience it all…
Aaaaaanyway, so for nobody to be talking about this most determinant of all factors in a story, most especially the story of the history of the country and the civil war between the populace, is today as in these days 2026, not just something that can be ignored and not noticed or mentioned not telling the story and not even in a silent conversation with themselves once reading the pages of the books, and much less who wrote the book, or what edition they were, etc etc etc ad nauseam, is unacceptable, sorry there’s nothing I can do about it other than just tell ya all here in this comment and then leaving it and moving on with my life and my day and my evening, heartbroken and frustrated that the history of the founding of a free country that became the leading economy in the world today, is being told with all of the biases of the day embedded in it and worse without even knowing it or worse knowing it very well it’s the chance to join the story telling and embed their own fuckery biases because nobody who’s gonna hear it will give a f*ck about it either.
@ethandebarge5785
July 31, 2026 at 10:32 am
Technically, if we’re being strict on definition, it was not a civil war. It was a southern revolutionary war against the seat of power that was Washington. And also more than likely, even without the institution of slavery the war would’ve happened in the 1800’s
