Should Phones Be Banned At Gigs?

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | October 6, 2026

On Friday, American singer, songwriter and producer, Phoebe Bridgers, announced that she’s returning to the stage after a three year hiatus with “The Lost Tour”. However, there’s a twist…..phones will be barred and a strict no-filming rule enforced. She’s not the first artist to ban phones, but is she right? Should they be banned? Are they distracting? Let me know what you think in the comments.

I'd much prefer to keep my phone at home when I go to a show, it's just too easy to lose or get stolen. But the catch is that we CAN'T! We have to use our phones to get INTO the venue. No paper tickets anymore. Can't print your ticket that has the barcode.

I take mine out to take a couple pictures of each of the band members because some of these guys are getting up there in age and I want to have a beautiful photograph of them in my phone I can pull them up and just remember that night. I don't video songs I just shoot a few pictures and then I put it away.

Iron maiden asked the put the phones away in Eddfest. But Few people did. They really got my nerves. İ came from all the way From Turkey to enjoy you and Iron maiden, paid all that money. They block my view because of stupid phones

I'm not much of a phone user at concerts (grab a quick photo as the show is starting, maybe a 20 second recording of a chorus I like) but I'll be at this show and I'm very excited. The amount of people just holding their phones recording for the entire show has always seemed crazy to me, and I swear it's gotten way worse in the last 2-3 years. Very excited to see the vibe at this Phoebe concert.

The last time I went to a gig was to see Slayer and Cradle of Filth ( I enjoy a variety of genres) in the early 2000s, pre phones. The energy of the audience was part of the experience. I just wouldn’t bother going to a gig now days. Sorry, Justin.

I can enjoy a show and also film it. Just film my favourite song to look back on if it's sentimental to me but mostly I dont film the whole thing. But ticket prices for gigs is soooo expensive and if you have to pay for travel too. I feel people want to have the recordings to relive the night after it's all done as you've saved up for months to be able to pay to see the show. You want a video memory for yourself.

My sister and mom who love concerts are no longer able to go to them due to illness… but they love the vibe and to see a little of the shows. So I don’t film a whole show but just a little just to give them those fond memories.
I still dance etc. One venue I go to always lets you film the famous songs but they’re not always my favourite songs.
Sometimes you can get some official recordings but they are not from the angle I like. I think it depends on a lot on the song too.
Sometimes you can only see the show on someone else’s phone when you get the ‘7’ foot person who you don’t see in real life but appears in front of you at a concert. I think overall it’s a personal choice. I’ve seen you twice and didn’t use my phone as it wasn’t the right atmosphere but you were amazing.👍

I remember first seeing The Darkness at Wembley arena and I was guilty of taking a few photos of you guys. For me it’s capturing the memories of a great time although I don’t record the whole thing but only parts of it.

bro, i saw you in Brighton last year (or maybe the year before) when you were on the guys shoulders ripping a fat solo you grabbed a dudes phone out of his hand and launched it across the venue and carried on going, laughed my ass off.

Personally I prefer to live in the moment. It’s distracting to see little screens bobbing about. I thinks it detracts from the live music experience. The concerts of my youth were events planned for weeks or months in advance, they were amazing spectacles meant to be savoured. I’ve never thought that a poorly shot grainy video would add to some already great musical memories. Phones have really killed the vibe.

Phoebe continues to be awesome. Like seriously, live now ffs.. Snap out of it. You do not need to document your entire life, just start remembering shit, make intense memories rather than try to fight the auto focus on your phone… The more you connect, the stronger the memory will be. All you're getting with that phone is BVFSWBFWSFBFWSBFWSF.. A fully saturated mic digitized and saved alongside shaky video… When you could have just watched any other person's upload instead. Maybe you'd even be in frame.
Stop being dumb, folks. You're living right now. RIGHT now. Phones are for when you're zoning out at the end of the day. Concerts are for locking in.

I was watching a video of Take That's Circus Tour at Wembley, which was fairly early camera phone days, and its great to see people just living in the moment and waving their arms, singing and dancing. I cant understand why someone would go through the pain in the ass that it is to book a ticket, pay a good chunk of money, then waste the whole experience and the magic of it, by viewing it through a small screen, rather than a mk1 eyeball. Personally, I have a little rule for concerts. First 2-3 songs, get a little picture, then phone away. I'm not bothered about video. They never sound that great anyway. The person doing the sound is mixing it for the room, not for the tiny microphone on your iPhone

I’m in two minds myself about phones at concerts. I like to get a few pics if I’m near the front maybe a quick video maybe 10/20 seconds. Not many tho because I feel removed from the experience. I’s rather experience the show than view it through my phone. Saying that having the choice taken away from me would put me off going to a show.

I am ok banning recording/texting during shows.

However, putting my devices in a bag? That don't work for me.

Concerts are a casual thing, and if I feel like I'm entering a Prison, that don't work.

P.S. I have no problem keeping my phone in my pocket, with a rule that says "if your caught recording, you lose your phone", I'm ok with that.

I do wonder if more artists/venues recorded the gigs themselves and allowed you to purchase after, that most people would not use phones as much.

I like to watch back events I've been to, but if it was filmed professionally and accessible, I'd be all over that!

I agree no phones. The last gig I went to was a load of old men above a pub listening to a blues guitarist. I was the youngest and I was in my late forties then, I didn’t have a smartphone at the time and no one had a phone out it was a magic gig

I go to shows to see a band I like play live on stage, not to see the back of everyone's phone. At that point, it's a listening party, and I could buy the record and do that at home. Massively enjoyed seeing Bob Dylan (twice!) and he has the no phones policy with the Yonder packs. Honestly, phones ruin my live show experience.

A lot of gigs these days are ruined for me by people just having a general chat throughout the gig but at volumes loud enough to be heard over the music. I don't know who is paying those prices to go and pay no attention, but I hate it with a passion. I've just stopped going altogether because I do think live music experiences these days are awful for several reasons, and phones are one of them.

I've stopped going to concerts because of this. It's absolutely mental and fills me with rage the second you see all the phones in front of you come out. I don't want to go and see people perform if I have to try and spot them between 50 little glowing screens. This culture of "we must record everything" is going to be incredibly detrimental to humans. I think it means we practice remembering things less, and devalues the idea of privacy and having an experience that you know you have to keep and hold as your own.

Bad phone behaviour and people scream-singing along to every single song so the artist is completely drowned in bad singing the whole concert.

I am really looking forward to both things getting out of fashion.
