In this video I say that YouTube's algorithms don't favor longer videos. This was once true, but this is no longer true (in fact it probably wasn't true when this video was made). It's all about watch time baby!

Real Talk. You gotta start making videos full time first, and then you can talk about more monetizing strategies.
Think of it like you're building a store, and banking on the belief people are going to shop there. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you can't have it both ways.

Your videos are great, and people like them and they like you, don't get me wrong. But when you aren't even consistently uploading weekly, it is not the time to start talking about $$$. Or I mean, I just think you'd have a lot more luck if you provide people with the full time the1janitor experience first, and then ask for support.

It's on you to make the move, I think you can do it. But if you have any aspiration to move to LA it will be a lot easier there if you get some collabs going.

I know that this probably sounds off topic but honestly its pretty much on topic: Good content like yours staying free and being reasonably visible (and not on a massive corporation's standards) Depends most on there being a true alternative to Youtube and there being a Universal Basic Income.

An alternative to Youtube specifically that lacks the irritating and manipulative algorithms.

A Universal Basic Income because it would allow artists and content creators to just do what they love with the knowledge that they will be financially secure and knowing fully that almost every viewer has money that they can pledge. So asking for a little money up front isn't excluding broke and excessively poor people. While also maintaining the extra legitimacy from not having advertisements or sponsors if they are so inclined.

Until essentially BOTH of these things happen, making content for money will always be on capitalist/corporate terms. And I think this is very sad.

It's really hard to get big on YouTube these days. You pretty much had to be on here when it very first started up, and your page was featured on the main page. OR, you do a really dumb public prank (Which you hate) and get a fan base off of that. You should try Patreon. Maybe make it to where you don't get a certain amount per video, but per month. You would have more pledges that would actually come through. Maybe you should try a new series on here. Do something different.

I'm curious about how many subscribers you had when you added subabble (and patreon if it came before the partnership).

I'd love to be able to focus on my channel full time, and patreon is an excellent way to do this, but as a small channel (only 190 subs at this point) I feel like it would be fruitless, and potentially drive people away, thinking that I'm only in it for the money or something.

How have you felt the response has been to moving to the crowd funding model?

For everyone who is transferring from Subbable to Patreon, You may have noticed this already, but keep in mind that Patreon allows you to set a monthly maximum so that you never go over your budget. For example, if you pledge $5 per video, but set your maximum to $15, you will not be charged more than $15 per month, even if I make 40 videos that month. Just wanted to clarify that because there were concerns.

YouTube has become a bit like TV I think, in the same sense that you get shows that people hate but still get a lot of air time and ad revenue, like X-Factor type of shows for example.

Which is honestly very bad, not because these shows are on YouTube now, it's because the whole point of YouTube is that the content is self produced by independent people. and if people try to mimic TV, then it becomes disgustingly dishonest and the motives change for the worst.

Like Prank Videos for example, this is something that was dragged from TV and people on YouTube mimic it now, it's not the same as in TV where there is an entire production behind it that keeps it ethical despite being about pranking people, on YouTube, as long as it make views, the person on camera can do fuck all and even exploit it, since hate towards him drives him even more recognition and even way more views.

YouTube is faulty, VERY faulty, but it's still a home to a lot of really good content too,

Including yourself the1janitor, keep being insightful and thought provoking! pledging you on Patreon as I speak

I feel kind of a dick for saying it, but depending on how this goes i may have to retract my support, because the dollar is getting quite pricey here in Brasil… And paying a dollar per month was still inside my means, but if there are many videos per month it may be a much more substantial expense…
