Let’s be honest, A LOT of white leftist are class reductionist. And those “low info voter” comments always remind me that they aren’t interacting with “low class black people”. A lot of them can’t understand that black America is a colonized group in a settler colonial project. And just trying to class your way out of that convo will always lead to the natural resentment from black Americans. Even if you’re a Marxist Leninist, without a Frantz Fanon analysis on race in a settler colonial project you will never reach black people.

Mamdani has a lot of things going for him that Bernie doesn’t, but I think the real reflection is that Mamdani can activate more people to support him to overwhelm the liberal gatekeepers. Those gatekeepers were and still ARE a problem.

If in 2016 you were more concerned about Bernie not having black friends and not the fact that his policy would have materially improved your life and that making you vote for Hillary "superpredator" Clinton, you kinda deserved to have Trump as your president

ok. so I was interviewed by Bernie back in the early 90s at the Burlington Mall (in Burlington, MA) when he was doing grass roots political young generation outreach. He, in my opinion…had struggled in the arena of his demographic. I think most politicians struggle with this.
I went on to obtain 2 degrees…traveled globally. And in betweeen between was in western MA during the Buffalo NY political race. So I DO know why you referenced the dilemma of that race. That being said, I believe the disgruntled/defensive comments and opinions are a very generational experience. And sometimes, knowing historical contextual reference(s) as you did your best to make aware (on a very personal and living-it level) makes all the difference. And this polital circus and it's acrobatics hasn't changed.

Just popping back here to reminisce. What a shock to see Mamdani taking the side of Zionists and their illegal land sales to condemn protesters and label resistance movements as terrorists as he cozies up to his friend Ladner.
It’s poetry, it rhymes.

I genuinely do not understand how it is racist to call people who do aren’t up to date on politics low information voters. How else are you meant to refer to the type of voter who does not know everything that a politician is running on?

I think scinerscism is always necessary when it comes to politics, I think that it's not just about where they are right now but where they end up
In regards to the collage application, the guy probably didn't think long about that
Also, was there a South Asian check box in his college application? Was there an African checkbook? The point is actually that institutions don't recognize the true diversity of the population so they can define what diversity is and put everyone into boxes
Getting frustrated by this is a distraction I agree

Dang bro .. smh lol I was rocking with you until you hit me with the "Y'all need to go to Church, not to engage with their culture or beliefs, but to utilize their platform and power for our political gain."
I get how important the politics are, and how for you, that felt like a common sense strategy that is under explored due to people's biases… I get that, and respect that part of the sentiment.
But as someone who has engaged with the Church my whole life, from an organizing, cultural, and spiritual aspect, it's hard not to hear that as predatory and dismissive. Lol
I also understand that the "Church" historically has harmed many people. As a member of the Church, I have wrestled with, and fought to do what I can, where I can to atone for that damage and those positions. That makes it hit even harder when someone suggests what you suggested.
I get it, but it's also enough for me to end my watch time.

Just casually starting the conversation with som racial slirs and antagonizing half the population. Why? A lot of minorities are actually culturally conservative, so they don’t like Bernie. It’s that simple.

Wait I’m so confused by this title, so I’m not even watching it because it sounds like there’s a misunderstanding on how government works. I’m not understanding how mamdani who ran for mayor of one city lol succeeded and it makes sanders who is a senator of a state a failure. He didn’t succeed in the presidential bid but it doesn’t even make sense that we would be comparing a city to a country, esp in American politics. Maybe the point of the title is meant to make me watch the video, but I’m being a bit selective in what I put in my mind and that just sound like a whole lot of baseless malarkey one is putting up because it’s their job, not necessarily because they have anything legitimate to say.

I wasn't sure what I was going to experience when I clicked this video but I came out absolutely loving it. My experiences mirror your realities and knowledge, especially your point on Black church communities. I've been canvassing in my area (in the South) for a special election, and I've since learned the correct way to connect with people: immerse yourself in the lived histories and community culture. Don't be a stranger, basically!
I've also learned something from the other commenters here: the term "class reductionist". So, I'll be looking more into that now.
Anywho, thanks for a thought-provoking video!

European here, a social democrat is pretty normal over here. In general America really lacks social democrats, or even liberal democrats or other types of leftist. I think a lot of the old guard think of the left as communist, its not it a normal think to want to help people out and help out underprivileged people of all kinds.

i really agreed with the talking points here on how the white left is so quick to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to political orginisation
and its alway the black folks that have to show them how to do that work
im speaking from expereince her as i was (and still to some extent am) a chronically online white leftist
but my first job was a remote customer service job a good amount of my coworkers were black and i got a whole new perspective on politics from that job
because exactly as you said its incredibly easy to say "eh these people are a lost cause they dont know anything about politicts *lion eating there own face party meme*"
and then you spend the work day with that kind of person getting to know them and you realise they want the same things as you do and coalition building is the real work that needs to be done not just telling people what would be the best policy and expecting them to listen

I appreciate the intellectual dissection of this video, but there are so many variables left out (especially in the part about Bernie) that I’m not sure if it’s an innate bias or conscious one. The video talks a lot about what Bernie didnt do to win black votes, and leaves out what he did for black voters in comparison to Hillary or Joe. Hillary spoke about “bringing [blacks] to heal,” voted for policies that hurt the black community, and had racist dog whistles when she ran against Obama, and you’re telling me because Bernie didn’t make a black friend or moved to Maine, his consistent messaging for over 40 yrs and fighting for equal rights didn’t matter? If that’s true we really need to look inward as a community and eradicate this sense of purity to justify our biases, and in which case this video is focusing on the wrong issues. No, folks liked Hillary because of her husband, and because she served with Obama. She was a household name and the Democratic Party as well as republicans vilified and created dis/misinformation about what a democratic socialist is. It was a dirty tactic and too new a label to digest.
The second time Bernie ran against Joe Biden and the others, he would have won weren’t it for the call that was made to have all the other candidates drop out all at once and endorse Joe Biden overnight. It was an orchestrated hit to consolidate votes and take Bernie out. None of this has to do with what he didn’t do for blacks, or him not going to black churches. If he lost any black votes by virtue of being himself, I’m convinced those were votes he would’ve never convinced anyway.
This is quite a take, to say the least. And if true, it is more of an indictment on us as a community voting in feelings rather than logic than it is on him. He was the better choice for black people both time he ran by a LANDSLIDE.

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the fact that Mamdani lost the black vote to Cuomo in the primary, but then it completely flipped and he beat Cuomo with it during the general. Can this phenomenon be chalked up to a fealty to the Dem party within NY"s black voting community, or was something else going on?

It took me a long time to understand why Bernie couldn't be trusted in the first place based on his record and what he has done since those elections. Now that I'm here, I still hate the electoral system for throwing away America's last chance at reform. Now we are in Fascism. End the Settler Colonial nightmare.

One is a mayor of a single city.
One of the senator of an entire state.
Not sure how Mamdani "suceeds"… he was just elected. Bernie's been elected in public office.
This is why the left loses. Because we won something your video is titled in a way that burns Bernie down. Yep, sounds like a leftist.

One things I often think about is when a person feels like they're not going to receive the benefits of a good policy of because historically they haven't then they often were in opposition of that good policy because "if I'm going to hurt then everyone's going to hurt…
I hear this class reduction list arguing it a lot but if you have a thousand people drowning you and 300 of them are injured… Do you focus on telling the drowning people to get out of the way so you can help the injured or do you focus on saving the drowning people and treat the injury when you get to them.
Everyone who complains and cries about cloth reduction of them are the very reason the Republicans are in Howard and we have moved so far to the right today…
And before you argue with me about that, explain to me how you're going to get people that are drowning and suffering to understand that they need to get out of the way because other people are worse off…

When I was participating in socialist spaces one thing I tried to stress to those that weren't familiar with church the important role they play in organizing. I'm a pastor's kid (white) and I got to see firsthand the way the Evangelical Christian movement was being used as an organizing tool for the republican party. Part of the issue with organizing in rural places is that the only social infrastructure available to organize is often the church.
