“It’s Over” – the dreaded words spoken when a band breaks up. Why do bands break up? That’s the question I’ll be exploring today. Being in a band can be tricky and challenging but it is still the best job in the world. Why would it end?

I think that’s a fairly accurate list of reasons, but they forgot death or illness/injury of a critical band member.
Of the successful bands I personally know, the first band broke up due to a combination of the illness of one of the two founding members, followed by the ego of the lead singer, who didn’t write any of the music. At the time they were signed, and since the singer couldn’t use any of the music written by the founders, their genre changed dramatically, from hard rock to junk pop (stupid songs). The remaining original band members all quit (creative differences, and loathing of the singer).
The second band split due to commitments to family, but reunited about 15 years later.

Psychology 101. I think some people are completely clueless about where you're supposed to put your ego in ANY kind of creative team work. Dealing with those types drains the energy needed for success. I think you have touched on a very important topic. Egocentric people sometimes become very abusive bullies.

I think most good bands only have a couple album longevity for good music. only the old greats can put out more than 4 great records.

Re the quote from the advert I think it's from one of those ads Aardman did for British Gas, where the voices of real punters were put into the mouths of model animals. I remember I think a turtle in exercise gear saying he liked that his heating was "easily turn on-and-offable".

Justin can you discuss Suede? Can you also discuss Brian Epstein both during & post-Beatles and Chris Blackwell? Producers who were behind the scenes but were highly influential? I just finished Bono’s memoir and he discusses at length U2’s producers and their influence on shaping their sound. Fascinating. Producers play such an important role but don’t always get their due.

Hi Justin Re Your comment about radio play. We much prefer exploring on You Tube. True example, I was in a record shop and got talking to the assistant who was in his twenties. I asked him, what do you buy? His answer: Johnny Cash. He has discovered him on the internet without the “help” of a radio station. Where I live there is no rock radio station…but we can explore the internet. Others must feel the same, judging by the sheer number of subscribers you have and are gaining.

Musical differences is a major advantage within a group/band. It's when only some of the member's ideas are picked up that it becomes a problem.

The band, U2, shares all money equally and has from the beginning. They did this to prevent angst from the get go. Bono has commented on how even though he and The Edge do most of the press, all royalties are divided equally.
They have been together since 1976 and easily one of the best bands of all time.

I’ve started a band that sounds like if Nirvana was from Blackburn n only covered Tom Waits’ wonky gypsey stuff in an almost surf styly, that or maybe more concisely The Fall playin zorba the Greek or maybe like The Shadows on heroin . We’re gonna go right to the topper most of the popper most surely. Smirk.
