About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

something I've learned in my experience: Ducks will protect their babies while chickens are like "ok i don't care, more food for me."

We had horrible luck with buying birds from Murray McMurray. We lost probably 30 birds. The ones that lived (6) are now laying. I am probably going to end up buying ducks from our towns feed store. I have 140 ish chickens and 5 peafowl. I am going to get ducks in the spring and hopefully sell tons of chicks this spring.

Where I live, there seems to be a problem of not enough female ducks. There are so many people constantly trying to get rid of their male ducks. My aunt has three males and one female.
We got two females and four Drake's. Don't worry though we keep the magority of males separated.

"you can actually have somebody just give you a bird or buy it off of craigslist. The disadvantages to this approach is you don't necessarily know how they were raised, they could carry some sort of illness"
I have only ever raised my own pet dogs before, but this information might help. For People that keep a lot of Snakes (Chandler's Wild Life / Snake Discovery) Whenever they buy new snakes, they quarantine them in a separate room for 1 month. This way if they do in fact have an illness, it wont spread to the rest of their snake collection.
I thought maybe maybe you could pull a page out of that book and just keep new ducks separate from your current ducks for a month, possibly even 2 months if your that paranoid.
Edit: I'm fully aware that people quarantine their Snakes for other reasons INCLUDING the one I mentioned. But they don't apply here.

Do u know that ducks n geese can live decades n still b profitable, taste or produce / most breeds of fowl mate for life n don't usually cross the breed barier- hense 2 white males surfboarding each other /male ducks ,usually loose their penis at certain time each year so that there is only a certain breeding time /ducks n geese do good together when started off as young as possible/ bless you n please use that Hugh duck for breeding n protect him like he's made if GOLD CUZ HE IS !!! He will plump up all ur hatched ducklings that he's the father of !!!*TÀKING FEATHERS OFF DUCKS -& GEESE is a temp that is very accurate but I've forgotten the temp. …however u can go to "50ducks in a hot tub" vlogs n look into Oct./Nov. First culling for the homeless in Canada where he told in detail about the temp. N WHY it has to be SO exact !!! (To cool feathers don't come off easily too hot skin n fearyhers come of but in patches just rite temp. Beautifull clean bird …as shown in vlog). N I watched it frt
To end even the culling with usuing an axe !!! M they did about 100 to 3oo in a 3day span n like 8 hour days !!! Start to bagging n wt. Of each !?? ✓ it out n he's available for ??? 's was at it for more than a decade …!!!

I greatly appreciate your thoughts on store vs farm bought birds. We had the opposite problem – bought chicks from a local farmer and one died right away and a few others struggled a bit. But, the ones we purchased from stores like Cal Ranch/Tractor Supply/Pratt's Pets absolutely flourished! Love your videos — thanks so much for sharing and having such a humorous, animal-loving heart! 😉

Method 6: have one of your fans prank send you some fertilized eggs just to see what happens. I had considered sending your farm some fertilized peacocks eggs because I thought it would be funny.

I've subscribed to your channel and have been watching your videos regularly for the past few months now and they really helped me get through the city life/student/work. Your videos are both educational and entertaining to watch as they also calm my anxiety and stress after a long day/week, they gave me a nice temporarily escapism from life in general (I've mentioned before but i absolutely love the slow-mo footage of the farm animals haha going to miss those for now), but i can only imagine how much work you have to go through for not only the farm but also your full time job behind the scene, everybody needs their alone/family time and you deserve it! 😊 will be looking forward to seeing gold shaw farm again with a refreshed farmer and bigger toby soon 😊

I've seen our regional P.O. call people, it's not their home Post Office. They do it sometimes when the birds would be sitting around for hours waiting for the next truck to go to the town P.O. Distances aren't ridiculous here, so it works.

We started with 2 emden geese and after 2 years of trying to get them to sit a nest unsuccessfully, we used a broody buff orpington to hatch 7 of the emden eggs. It was a sight to see when the momma orpington would scratch for worms and then step back to allow the baby geese to eat them, motherly instinct. More over, the geese out weighed their surrogate mother in about 3-4 weeks, yet still tried to sit under her at night for warmth. Chickens and Geese living together…
