Was Faster Pussycat’s Whipped Really a Mistake? | 34 Years Later
When Faster Pussycat released Whipped in 1992, fans had high expectations after the band’s first two albums became staples of the late ’80s hard rock scene. But did Whipped live up to those expectations… or was it the beginning of a new direction that left some fans behind?
In this panel discussion, six longtime hair metal fans look back at Whipped 34 years later. We share our memories of Faster Pussycat before the album’s release, our first impressions when Whipped came out in 1992, and whether our opinions have changed over the years. Opinions on the roundtable were definitely divided!

As a Mother Love Bone fanboy, I loved the tribute to Andrew Wood, Mr. Lovedog. I thought next to Say Hello to Heaven, it was the best tribute to him released amongst all the tributes from Candlebox to Alice N Chains and Temple of the Dog. I can see where the !987 fan of FP would not like the second half of the record much. Totally different sounding group. I loved that shit though.

I thought it was thier best album. All killer and no filler. They brought out some new sounds, best production and complete song writing to the table, and also brought back that Pussycat humor that was all but missing on the preivious album (sans Slip of the Tounge). If it came out in 90 or even early 91 it would of been a huge album. Like Warrant's Dog Eat Dog, the dog eat dog world of mtv/rolling stone mega push of grunge, hurt any chance of those records of being top sellers.

I ran into Ryan after he recorded this but before it aired, so I knew what to expect. Love Pussycat to death, including this album. How can you not love everything about this band. I learned how to play guitar by playing along to their entire debut album, so I'll always have an emotional connection with the band.

My Cool Rock n' Roll brothers Anthony – Guru/Patrick, Jeremy/Jonesy, RVK/Matt I Love all of you a whole lot now as far as FASTER PUSSYCAT is concerned are a Kick ass Sleazy, Glam Metal band that I love a whole lot '' Whipped '' the whole entire album rocks '' Loose Boody '' too funny I love the hooks to that song it cracks me up whenever I listen to that song. I'm a Big huge FP fan a 100% through & through I just feel that Taime Down should get the rest of the remaining original band member's back minus the original drummer who recently passed, I've only met Taime Down – Gus 1 time when I was living in Colorado who was best friends w. 1 of my best friends name Danny Gunn who was Gus's neighbor what I would Love a whole lot is for all the original band line up to come back into the fold/mix and make a new album w. the Classic FP sound that would make my day Big time. I love Wake me when it's over…brings back great memories….We use to rock that and…. Faith no more… Real thing…and Jon Bonjovi young guns 2 soundtrack…all three of those albums came out around the same time…..Whip had a couple good tunes…then I went Heavier!!

Faster Pussycat to this day is a great band and a great live band. First show I went to after everything started back up after Covid.

Just a quick comment on all these “legends” lip syncing. Motley Crue, Wasp, The Eagles and KISS. You aren’t shit. I loved all these bands but You are all jokes now. Ozzy performed His final concert on His deathbed basically and didn’t lip sync a fucking thing. That’s why all of You will never be at the height Ozzy is.

I really like some of Faster Pussycat’s songs and some are just ok. The ones I like are played often. Since RVK didn’t live in the sleeze era maybe that’s why he hates it definitely can be an acquired taste but I’m old and love it. Best Channel on YouTube. Thanks guys

"Whipped!" is a real stomper. "Nonstop To Nowhere" is a great opening song, and "Out With A Bang" is a great closer. The album has great arc, flowing from great songs (Madame Ruby's Love Boutique) to silliness (Loose Booty). Overall, it's unfortunate this album didn't drop before the great musical realignment.

Whipped Kicked…probably the reason I liked the band. Where they a great band?….meh. The Donkey show and music after Whipped was …shall i say garbage. The first 2 albums were decent enough to own. Whipped definitely their best. Fat Girl was great….you know SteelPanther was a fan!

I never really got into FP. But based on this episode I gave this album a first listen. Oddly enough my initial fav is out with a bang. I love the groove coupled with the slithering lyrics

Love Faster Pussycat!! The sleazier the better. They said Pussycat gave glam metal herpes!! Heard Bathroom Wall first and then Wake Me came out and it was on for Faster Pussycat for me! Whipped for me was a great record. Nonstop to Nowhere!

most of the album that came out in 92 were some of the best production thar hair bands ever released. Pulled from Winger, Dog eat dog from Warrant, Revenge by Kiss, The Wild Life by Slaughter and Whipped by Faster Pussycat to cite just some of them !

I had never heard of them until a friend in college had the first album. I LOVED Wake Me. I bought Whipped as soon as it came out, and I liked it. But sadly I probably haven’t listened to it in 30 years. I buried a Wake Me cassette at the base of Mt. Rushmore lol don’t ask me why. I have no idea. Then I went to the biker rally in Sturgis.

Off the top of my head, (80s) bands with first three stellar albums, LA Guns, Bulletboys, Love/Hate, Warrant, and Faster Pussycat. All we're solid or better and the growth and expansion was evident with each followup.

Awesome album. Was in line with progressing as a band and song writers. Wake Me is still my favorite. Like The Power and the Glory hole and the cool singles they have put out

I think Whipped is a really good album overall. It does lack a focused direction, but still lots of fun tunes with cool guitar solos but also some wacky filler. Their debut album is my number one pick followed closely by Wake Me When It's Over minus HoP. I'd be good to never hear that song ever again. MTV, Video Jukebox, and the radio wore me out on it for good.

IMO, all 3 guitarists were at the top of their game on Whipped. Several people during interviews on this very channel have mentioned how Eric Stacy is actually a top tier guitarist/musician that nobody really knows. The guitar solo in Nonstop is actually one of my fav guitar solos from the era.

bought it when it came out I was kinda disappointed with it. Its a LONG album and is kinda all over the place. Was one of the first CDs I bought. I was excited to open the 9 panel poster of the album

I'm kind of like so-so with FP. Never cared for Taime's whiny, off-key voice or the band's overall lack of tight musicianship. They had sleaze and attitude for days, but didn't have the chops to back it up.

For me it's their most memorable album and my personal fave. I was genuinely surprised at the time when it didn't 'Hit' with audiences, as I thought it was full of hooky tracks with a lot of potential crossover appeal with the 'Alternative' scene. Just goes to show…you never can tell what people are going to like.
