Did the Blues Kill Cinderella? The Heartbreak Station Debate

The Hair Metal Guru | August 21, 2026

Was Heartbreak Station the album that kept Cinderella from reaching the next level of superstardom?

In this episode of The Hair Metal Guru, we take a look back at Cinderella’s 1990 third album, Heartbreak Station. After the massive success of Night Songs and Long Cold Winter, the band took a very different direction—leaning heavily into blues, roots rock, and even country influences.

The album still had a few great songs, and Cinderella certainly didn’t disappear. But compared to what bands like Poison and Mötley Crüe were accomplishing at the time, Heartbreak Station represented a major shift in direction and didn’t deliver the same commercial impact as their first two albums.

So we debate the big “what if”: What if Cinderella had given fans more of the straight-ahead hard rock they loved on their first two albums? Could that have helped Cinderella become one of the true superstar bands of the era, potentially putting them in the same conversation as Poison and Mötley Crüe and even earning them a spot on something like The Stadium Tour?

Was Heartbreak Station simply Cinderella following their artistic instincts—or was it a missed opportunity at a crucial moment in their career?

Cinderella absolutely had a successful career. But could they have become even bigger?

It started with Long Cold Winter which was wayyyyy too bluesy for my taste and almost obnoxiously non metal. Esp the title track. Oddly I love title track for Heartbreak Station which is almost as mellow. 😆

I LOVE LOVE "Night Songs," "Long Cold Winter," and "Still Climbing." HBS had to grow on me, but has done just that over the years.

Have you guys ever tried to get Eric, Tom, or Fred on the show?

Hey Anthony, respect!👊 I believe your musical taste has matured a lot after so many deep conversations with some of rock's biggest talents.👏👏👏 F**k those other 3 guys though, they don't know 💩🤣

Which begs the question….Did Tom ever really want to make the style of music the and the band did for Night Songs and Long Cold Winter? Or, did he write heavier more “hair metal” sounding music just to get their proverbial foot in the door?

The answer is no. Long Cold Winter was the natural lead into Heartbreak Station. There's any number of interviews with Tom Keifer where he talks about his influences. The first show he saw was The Rolling Stones, Some Girls tour. HS is not a big departure. Bad Seamstress Blues, Gypsy Road, The Last Mile, off of Long Cold Winter were all showing more roots and blues-rock. Even Shake Me off Night Songs is a bad ass rock and roll somg, NOT metal. They didnt have much of a choice on how they were made to look on Night Songs. Cinderella didn't change. Why cant everyone experience the same musical growth and maturity?

It's not the blues/country/acoustic sounds that make HS a harder listen than the other Cinderella songs, each song is just too long. There's a lot of looong slow fades, pratting about at the end of songs and "songs of two halves". I did an edited version cutting a lot of that out and it's much more focused and actually a brilliant album underneath the "excess".

I thought Cinderella was one of the most musically diverse bands of the genre and I appreciated their willingness to grow/stretch the boundaries of the genre. I think making safe choices is what put glam metal out of favor with a lot of people. They weren’t the only one that did this, but I felt like they were at the forefront of where glam metal should go.

So obviously, I loved this album then and still do now

What about all those demo's that they haven't released? No one ever talks about the demos, they have several albums worth of demo's that they did before they were signed. It would be nice to see these songs officially released and remastered. The demo's are not very good quality!

I loved Heartbreak Station… And last train out of my heart hit me real bad because I was just going through a divorce and in reality the whole album to me sounds like someone was going through a break up ,hence the name Heartbreak Station

I really liked this album at the time and I think they hinted at this direction a bit on long cold winter. The times were getting ready to change and I think some of the sounds were getting repetitive so I enjoyed some of the albums the went a little off course

They were ALL written by Keifer. Eric only had cred on one song LCW (If You Don't Like It) and one on HS (Loves Got Me Doin' Time) and one song on SC (Hot & Botherred).
Classic Album! Rock has always incorporated multiple things… blues, funk, country, etc. Y'all sound like the guy in HS that didn't like me because I liked multiple music types and he liked Krokus or some crap.

I'm actually shocked how many people like this album considering it sold pretty poorly. I didn't think it was a commercial hit at all. But, I'm glad there's people out there that like it.

Cinderella doesn't have a bad album in my opinion. Still Climbing is my favorite. Heartbreak Station is solid. I'm a fan of blues infused rock. This album might have a little too much however still good.
