This Museum hides SECRET GOODS
Thank you to Proton VPN for sponsoring. You can get 70% off at http://protonvpn.com/nostalgianerd ~ Today we’re headed to Swindon Museum of Computing. Mainly because I love visiting computer museums, but also because these places need our support; they’re doing the hard preservation work here, and without them, all this tech is lost. This is actually the FIRST dedicated computer museum in the UK, impressively, so let’s dive in and continue the Computer Museum Quest!

Tandy PET, the first computer I used and also my first systems analysis experience. Professor: Enter the number into field one. Me: Do I enter the commas? Professor: (laughing) I have no idea! Let's try it and see. Computer: Invalid number. 😀

Retrofest on the 30th and 31st of May is happening in Swindon. I'm planning on grabbing some time in this museum while I'm visiting that event.

I see you have some Psion Organisers. I'm a great fan of these, and actually still use them. One of them is used as a simple money recording system and another as a simple FORTH simulator. There were a ton of add-ons for these, including a pager that stored your incoming messages for you to read later. I had several computers (and programmable calculators) back in the 80's, including Transam Triton, TRS80, ZX81, Jupiter Ace, Amstrad CPC128, and several PC's.

A big thank you to people like Keith. I started my computer venture in 1984. I got onto a YTS as the Polytechnic of North London (later became University of North London, then Metropolitan University). They had a public area called the Community Computer Centre, one of the first places people could come in off the street and try out computers. A fantastic old boy ran it, name of Jack, retired and wanted something positive to do with his time. Jack showed me how to get access, gave me some hints, and just left me to my own devices. Wrote my first proper program using Lotus 1-2-3, one player noughts and crosses. The first time I played it, it beat me, only ever been happy to lose a game of noughts and crosses. After I left the YTS, I was 17 and got my first computer job based on what I had learnt in that centre.

I'm always disappointed at the lack of love, or even reference to, the Tandy line of computers. There was a time it held 60% of home computer sales in America, but nobody ever talks about how they basically started the whole home computing revolution. Why does everyone just "forget" they even existed? The innovations of the Tandy 1000 line was incredible! OS on a Rom for instant bootup if desired, Deskmate (one of the first truly integrated desktop programs where every program was linked and could share between the specialized programs), color graphics, integrated sound board, etc… Why not take time to make an episode focusing on all the amazing aspects of the Tandy line and it's impact on modern computing as it is today? A "computer museum" that doesn't even mention Tandy? Naw, pass.

Happy to be remembered of such magical places on Earth, where the long gone tech from our memories is kept alive and shared to everyone longing to experience it again, or even for a first time to kids, and maybe accompanied by their annoying and bit too-emotional father as soon as I get a chance to organize the trip.
