99% of my art is hard work. 1% is the tiny bit of talent I have.

Wow! So amazing. You really captured the truth of how things are. So many things determine who will be successful, it's so much more than hard work. Even those who are brilliant and gifted may never be seen if they are born at the wrong time, or in the wrong circumstance. Some simply have success handed to them, others push for years to create their dreams.

There's a great, 40-minute interview of Tom Clancy back in 1991 by the Academy of Achievement. Feel free to disagree with his political statements (he's very socially conservative); his life lessons are pithy and based in reality.

Also – next video? If you have not yet made a piece about your experience making a living doing videos, keeping your expenses down, working on other projects to supplement your youtube income… I think that would be interesting.

YES to all of this. Particularly: "Be prepared to bust your ass until the cheeks fall off."

Thanks for the honesty. We are not all created equal and all of us don't have to reach for the stars. A fulfilling life comes in many forms. Great work, keep it up!

I'm following my passion and I don't think I am an exceptional hare with the abilities to win the race, but dammit if I'm not a naive and determined tortoise.

Oh. My. GHOD! Thank you! I had a passion, that I really wanted to chase. It did not happen…because life happens while you are making other plans. My circumstances were meager, my support system was non-existent (My guidance counselor told me, the 5th in my class, to "go make pretty babies!"), but I had a PLAN. I DID work hard; really hard. I was on my way, WERKIN my plan, when life happened along and gave me a brain injury.
Back then, the standard diagnostics were CT-Scans and the beginnings of MRI. They didn't know that brain damage occurs on the CELLULAR level, not a tissue level. They looked at my scans and saw nothing abnormal. I was sent home with a bottle of narcotics and an assertion that I "Would be fine in a few days". I was not fine.
I did not know my family. I could not stand light or noise. I could not bear the sound of a voice on the telephone and I could not READ. Over the course of the next 3 years, I weaned myself off a serious opiate addiction, designed my own occupational therapies, and taught myself to read again.
By the time my youngest child went to school, I was reading at college level again and READY to go back to THE PLAN. Whack! Another accident caused me to have to start over, almost from scratch. I had to cope with additional symptoms and work really hard to regain the ground I lost. TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and PTSD made it impossible for me to resume the chase of my original passion.
I developed new interests and hobbies. I re-entered the work force. I have served as a volunteer in many community organizations. I have had a very fulfilling life.
I never thought of myself as "Exceptional". If I had had a choice, I would have given up. IN fact, I DID give up; at the end of EVERY DAY. But I kept waking up on this side of the grass. I had to make the best of it.
MY advice to new graduates would be, "If you have a passion, YES! Chase it if you can! Prepare to FAIL. Get ready to FIGHT for every step toward your goal. Prepare for life to throw you curve balls and sliders. Be ready. Be ready and ABLE to change your priorities and goals. If you are a one trick pony, you will be put out to pasture sooner than your talent wears old.
Work hard. Love Much. Laugh as often as you can. Life is HARD and NOT Fair. Have at it!"
I love your videos! I am so glad you share your thoughts with the world! Thank you

Unatural Vegan made a response to your "why im not vegan" video. Its very rational and she isint mean and "passionate" like many other vegans. I think it would be worth watching it and even making a response on it.

I love how realistic you are.
being a hardcore realist myself, I've noticed that very few people are as real and understanding as I am. and even fewer are as vocal about it.
I like to think I have a firm grasp on the truth of how our world works, and it seems that most people are constantly fooling themselves into thinking something that isn't true.
whether that be religion, superstition, or just "believing in yourself".
if it's abundantly obvious that your simply no at something, then your really just wasting your time trying to improve. no amount of work and "believing in myself" is gonna change the fact that I have ABSOLUTELY NO artistic talent at all.
I enjoy artistic things like painting and drawing, but I suck at them so hard I just wanna burn everything I create.
the key to "following your dream" is to first find something you enjoy THAT YOUR ACTUALLY GOOD AT.
it may not be your "one true passion" or whatever you wanna call it, but it's something you like doing that you can train yourself to improve on.
for me, that was running. I knew I was already a pretty good runner, but I also knew I could get better. I joined the track team in 8th grade and trained my ass off for months on end. by the end of the season I'd broken 2 school records that still stand to this day.
did I go on to become a professional athlete? no. but that was my own choice. I have kind of a vendetta against people that make millions playing children's games.

What is your opinion on this quote?
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." -Albert Einstein
I've never felt like it fully holds up, personally.

I so agree with this, my solution has been work really really hard, but be also smart with the opportunities that presents to me…. but most importantly expect absolutely nothing of life, high expectations are not a good thing, I prefer to be surprised

"Art talent" doesn't exist. it's all work, and getting the right advice. All artists started bad, but the sooner you start and the longer you keep the work, the better you are.

I appreciate the sentiment of telling people to follow their passion and believe in themselves. However I think this sometimes tips over into making people feel that if they just have a "regular" job or they aren't "passionate" about what they do then they have somehow failed at life. I think this is incredibly destructive. The vast majority of the jobs in this world are not the type of thing you're likely to be passionate about or dream of becoming. Someone has to pick up the damned garbage and that person isn't following a dream, but they ARE doing something vital for the proper functioning of our society. I worry that in our rush to assure people that they can and should follow their dreams, we're accidentally telling the section of humanity that does not end up achieving those dreams (ie the vast majority) that they are somehow failures and their contribution is worthless. Follow your dreams yes, but also remember that if all you're doing is working at a supermarket making sure the produce section is well stocked, you're also doing your bit to make society function, and that's OK too.

One step towards becoming exceptional: embrace failure as part of the process.

Hey man. I would love to hear your thoughts on those of us who feel "passionless." I myself tend to veer not towards one discipline but towards a plethora of them, and that can't at times(especially in our society) be disenchanting.
I hear discussions about this matter infrequently, but I think it's important.
P.S. To my other Jack's of all trades who might feel disheartened, there is a second half to that Jack of all trades quote. "master of none, but better than a master of one."
I find my generalist tendencies enable me to walk up to any group of people and feel able to empathize with them, to talk with them as equals.
But Das just me doe.

So glad you brought this up. I have a really hard time taking advice from a bunch of people who've already made it, especially those who are very famous. Famous authors and directors and shit will give you that same generic advice ("Follow your dreams", "work hard", etc.) but there's no good reason to believe they weren't just insanely lucky. There are tons of obstacles in life that billions of people will never overcome, and this is a good reason why a lot of people think the "American Dream" is dead. A lot of those supposedly boundless opportunities have already been snatched up and unavailable for decades now. It's really sad but I've had to give up several dreams simply because wanting something really badly cannot and will never change fate.

Determination and hardwork only go so far. As recent college grad, I personally know several others who have arguably worked harder than I did and they are currently unemployed or underemployed. I benefitted from a degree of luck after graduation by being in the right place at the right time. For every Ellen or Conan there are thousands of people with just good of work ethic and determination who still have not benefit from luck (yet). This is what I admire about the Bernie Sanders movement. He represents the entire data set of citizens instead of only those who are exceptional and lucky enough to have weath and influence on TV. Someone cannot an draw objective conclusion from the account of those few exceptional people (who have run the gauntlet and succeded) because this is a specific and limited subset of data. There is a large percentage of data that do not have a voice to tell their story in mainstream media.
