I would have expected more awareness and less use of the "A" word in reference to indigenous Australians. Especially considering the preferred term is also indigenous. Maybe you didn't know. Now you do.

when you made the recent "Halloween Special #3" and said you had a new channel, i immediately subscribed to Hulu and binged Season 1 on saturday, Season 2 on sunday. while there are definitely several references to "Smoke Signals" in many aspects (the opening shot of Season 1 starting from a Rez radio station, the way they use music throughout, the character of Brownie feels a lot like Lester Falls Apart from the Smoke Signals book, etc etc, plus the bus ride that you mentioned here) this series also reminds me of Sherman Alexie's book, "Indian Killer." you've probably read it, but for those who haven't there are multiple characters in that book who are all "indian killers" in a wide variety of ways, from the entire gamut of people who mean well to people who don't, on both sides of the racial lines. here in this show there are ways in which the entire series feels a bit like "part 2" of that novel, especially in the wide variety of ways racism is on display. there's the obvious creepy wealthy white guy with his fetishes and tattoos, but even the tension between "city NDNs" and "Rez NDNs," between the youth culture and the traditionalists, and on and on. there's just tension and conflict everywhere. and it's all handled so brilliantly, so poignantly, so powerfully.

i'm also both worried and curious if this season will touch on the way american media so often turns a blind eye to the way NDN women just "disappear" and are never heard from again. reading the BBC regularly there's a semi-annual report on how this happens all over Canada … though i imagine it's a problem everywhere. also, i'm on board with Patrick's "conspiracy theory" — i've only seen episode 1 of season 3 so far (today's a work day) but on the bus it definitely looks like Tini (sp?) has a few hickies after that conference.

in the end i can't praise this show enough, and am so thrilled to see the return of Patrick & Jacob, and the expansion of the crew into the 4 strong, smart voices and points of view. every one of you brought something surprising and powerful to the table, themes and details i had not thought of, connections i had not made, and i'm grateful for the chance to hear your perspectives. more power to you all. i'm definitely hoping for a 4th season. makes perfect sense.

It bothered me that when Maximus was showing him the home movies, Bear had no flash of recognition from the names mentioned. The culvert can also symbolize rebirth.

maximus foreshadows epi 3 with him mentioning that he was raised in a residential school

in regards to cuckoo's nest, please read the book
the main character and narrator is the native american
ken kesey hated the movie as they changed the pov and made it more a vehicle for jack

it seems to me that season 3 is more about generational trauma than the first two seasons

I thought once that Maximas was Bear meeting his future self, because his grandmother made spaghetti soup for him. And then I thought he was Bears grandfather maybe in his real life, Rita's Dad.

Love the Reservation Dogs series, and love hearing you guys talk about it. I always get something out of your conversations that I missed noticing while watching the episode — like the star chart inside the tunnel, calling the tunnel the "portal." Good one.

I thought the point about the culvert and walking over was astute, but that you partially missed the point. The constellations within the medicine wheel and later the culvert were also astute.

I’m using academic terms and theories for a reason here, because each nation has variations and I don’t want to talk about anything sacred that isn’t already out there (right or wrong). Bear’s nation is one of the Moundbuilder surviving nations.

There are academic theories about Moundbuilder religious beliefs, for this scene, that when we die, we take the Hand of God (Orion), which is a portal to the Path of Souls (Milky Way). On that path, our souls are confronted with a choice of paths and whether we reach our destination where our ancestors dwell depends on our choice.

So when Bear is shown the culvert, his choice of path, either going up the hill over the portal and avoiding the spiritual path entirely, or through the portal, along the path of stars, will determine his fate. When he goes through the portal and walks among the stars and emerges the other side, he is no longer the person he was when he entered it. He made the right choice for his spiritual awakening.

Maximus is such a sad character, and a warning to Bear. Be careful, "people will think you are nuts". Modern times is all about productivity, curing and getting people back to participating in capitalism, which is looked at as the means to a happy meaningful life. Earlier times in Europe and pre-contact times in the Americas, people who could talk to or see things that others couldn't were cared for and often revered, not punished for an inability to work and derided for not fitting in. Weird the church worships a man who said he could talk to God, and all the others who preceded him, yet burned wise women and seers as witches, then came to the Americas and killed or silenced people who said the same things here. Well, at least no one gets lit on fire anymore, but no wonder people who think differently often turn to drugs.

This show, man… Reservation Dogs just gets inside your head and then walks out holding your heart in its hands. I've never watched a show that just left me emotionally exhausted in as many ways as this one. This is healing. This is is speaking our truths. Imma miss it when it's gone.

Love your review cuz you take lines and mention their importance. Awesome. Most reviewers tell us a recap in a different way. They instill their opinions but you all give us something to think about. You mention details Wow
