Parks and Recreation’s Weirdest Episode

The first time you watched this episode, was it when it originally aired? Or did you watch it or the first time while binging it? I ask because I think watching it week-to-week is a major part of the framing of what the episode is doing. It's a troll, it's a shitpost, basically. You turn on Parks and Rec to watch it that week and instead, uh, what the fuck am I watching??? The commercials inside the episode are situated so you'd watch real commercials in between the fake ones, so you weren't really ever sure when the show was going and wasn't. I think they were ~going~ for surreal. I definitely feel this is a bit atonal compared to the rest of the show, so it really stands out to me when I watch it, and the second time or so I did, I didn't like it very much. But now if I rewatch the show, when this one comes on, I think about how this was fucking with people, which as an artist, I love to do too. We had plans for the second season of our show to fuck with people like this, and I just laugh at how in 2015 or whatever people were sitting down to watch P&R and instead watched something that almost felt Lynchian. I don't know, I really like this episode. It's supposed to sit just left of reality. I think the reason it may be hard to do that with is because there IS connecting tissue to the rest of the show (the interplay between April and Andy and its resolution), and maybe that's it's single weakness, but otherwise, I think they accomplished what they set out to do. (context: I'm a failed filmmaker who almost made it kinda big a couple of times but ultimately failed and now have a big following on social media because I gave up on everything and am in my shitposting era, so, ymmv) Great video though, really enjoyed it.

No skips on a rewatch? Season 1 is total trash. You left out a key fact. Chris pratt was so likable as a person they kept andy.

I find I mostly disagree with what you consider to be shortcomings of this episode. Because it is just one twenty-odd minute episode of many I think it has every right to be more of a broad showpiece for everything Andy is about. I also disagree it's a one trick pony, as the final act shows.
The most important question to ask is, If I were a kid in the mid twenty teens, would I enjoy this show? I say yes.
… now I'm wondering if they ever considered actually making it as a spinoff? I would agree that hypothetical could be a step too far …

Andy vs. April's growth – I would argue Andy didn't even evolve that much from season one. He basically just became a different person. In season one, he's actually pretty manipulative – he lies to Ann about how long he needs to keep his cast on so she'll keep waiting on him hand and foot. Honestly, that's some Kevin Can Fuck Himself behavior. He was also stalkerish in early season two. It was after that that he morphed into a more well-meaning doofus, and I think it was because they realized that for Andy to remain a character, he had to be a doofus and not Roy from The Office.

Which is fine! Just saying.

I love this episode lol. I watched it so many times as a kid, definitely my most rewatched at the time. Episodes that are very different like this and break the format of the show are so fun

Seriously, it's a meditation about their show ending, done with a show ending. The story is what's happening with the show. The writers and actors are sad that it's ending but glad that it happened, so they constructed a funny vehicle to process exactly that set of feelings. It's meta, so it's not to every taste. But it's not bad in any sort of absolute terms. It's just that sort of indirect "comedians' comedy."

I think this was intended to be a sort of bottle episode. Very few set pieces and all on one camera. But instead of doing what most bottle episodes do and make a very character and dialog story it made… this episode

Season 7 was a flop. They could’ve ended it on 6. I hate the technology they use like they’re way ahead in the future. Though I do like the Jeremy Jamm and Tammy episode. I laughed my ass off. The episode where Leslie and Ron make up is super sweet but I didn’t like how Ron went from behind Leslie’s dear friend to eff her over for missing their lunch date. It feels like they had a whole diff writer for the last season. The office did the same thing. As soon and there was no Michael Scott it took a nose dive. Not because Michael Scott wasn’t there but the writing was so bad.

I always got the impression this was supposed to be a dream ballet of sorts. To some extent of another i assume the show doesn't exist, this is Andy's life from his perspective – as a couch potato-ish guy, it kinda made sense he might imagine his life in this manner. I dunno do they ever mention the show directly outside of this episode, i might be reaching completely??

It's interesting that US sitcoms often struggle with their final seasons, while our sitcoms in the UK don't struggle as much. I think it's because US sitcoms are also part-drama, if only in a lighthearted way, and they often follow a character or group of characters as they navigate their lives and the various problems associated with living. Meanwhile, UK sitcoms tend to be less about character development and growth and more about snapshots. Sitcoms like The IT Crowd, Black Books, The Mighty Boosh, Bottom, The Young Ones, and Father Ted all have very good final seasons. Nothing is 'wrapped up'; it's just more stories featuring those characters.

Put simply, the problem is that US sitcoms strive for realism while UK sitcoms don't.

I honestly dont rewatch season 1 or 7 but I think the first time around they mostly have a place. Season 1 is worse than 7 in my opinion because of how unwatchable season 1 Leslie Knope is. Truly one of the greatest character shifts of all time was Leslie Knope from S1 to S2
