M83 and the Story of ‘Before the Dawn Heals Us’
Before the Dawn Heals Us by M83 was a big departure from the band’s first two records. We know M83 as a synth-heavy electronic pop outfit centered around Anthony Gonzalez, made famous the world over by the GRAMMY nominated 2011 hit “Midnight City,” but back in 2004 they were more known for electronic-based shoegaze. The departure of Nicholas Fromageau changed everything. This is the story of how M83’s “Before The Dawn heals Us” was made.

BTDHU is an underappreciated masterpiece. I tried listening to M83s other albums but nothing came close.

M83s Masterpiece. Not a single weak track
I would love it if he decides to tour to commemorate the 20th anniversary.

‘Safe’ is among the greatest tracks depicting nuclear annihilation ever written. Up there with:
4 Minute Warning – Radiohead
Apocalypse – Cigarettes After Sex
Two Suns in the Sunset – Pink Floyd (although ‘The Final Cut’ was a Roger Waters solo project imo)
There’s so many more to list, but I’m a sucker for the rather depressing/ slow variety therein.

I’ve listened to BtDHU so many times on repeat in weird mental jet lagged fugue states riding trains and subways through other countries that it’s permanently burned multiple layers deep into the most otherworldly colors my subconscious paints with.
