Whether spoken or signed, first words are important markers in the life of a human being. This is because language is one of the primary things separating us from every other organism on this planet. But language is not just a tool for communication. Embedded in these words are ways various people think about different things. It’s how cultures express their worldview. What happens when the language get lost?

    Languages are never "dying"; they are "abandoned" by a following generation on communicative grounds. Languages are maintained if they are useful. This mystical idea of language=thinking is debunked since long; how can you profit from the existence of languages you do not know yourself anyway? How does this represent "diversity"? It doesn't. The idea that one could not translate information into another language is ridiculous. Cultural differences are also levelled out nowadays: Chinese food in Amsterdam, Irish pubs in Thailand. Everybody wears the same t-shirts. Which is boring, but obviously preferrable to people. – Linguistic sentimentalism (the lament over language loss) is harmful: It would require to lock people into their remote places and not let them participate in world culture – then their languages would remain in use. Everything is impermanent, and language use changes even more often in the course of history than most people would imagine. Many of us would probably not understand our great-great-grandfather. It is not so bad, after all, that I can listen to a video in a globally known language. Otherwise, I might never hear your thoughts and could not discuss with you. → The biggest language is the best.

    We reached the point where everyone just wants to speak english and don't care about their native languages. That is the point of language death.

    In germany where I live, foreigners don't even try to learn german anymore. Everyone turning into annoying Anglophiles…creeps me out.

    In languages, I think it’s important to learn only the ones that you will use (and English). English is extremely dominant worldwide and gives you the most amount of opportunities. And other languages you should learn are those that you might use with your close family, or friends. I know English and Russian, but I have an Indian side of the family, So I want to know the Hindu, so that I can communicate with them. I also want to learn Kazakh, because I have a Kazakh side of the family. I wouldn’t suggest learning any language just for fun and to just know it because it’s cool. Learn those which will be actually useful to talk to people you already know, not people you think you might meet.

    Reality is this, we are all 100% going to die. Humans will dissappear from this planet, never to return. We will be lost in time and the universe won't even know we were here. So, if language dissappears…. it's fine. It evolution, in order for new life to come, life now has to die out. Sad but true. We humans are past our expiration date, time for us to go

    I don't think Genie at all disproves Chomsky's proposal. I'd argue if Genie had another child with her who had experienced the same fate, they would have created a language between one another. I think Genie largely created her own language in her head, but not entirely based on sound, more so based on thought and conceptions. Without the need to convey information you will just reiterate your own thought channels. You don't need language to explain that fire is hot etc. Its an experience, I think Genie largely experienced her reality through conceptions and didn't allocate sounds to many of them because there was no need to. However, if she had another child with her they would have allocated an agreed meaning on concepts through sounds and would have created their own language. I don't think Genie was incapable of learning language after that, but her brain wasn't specifically wired for it and thus showed no interest in retaining it beyond base necessity. Also, I think the way she was socialized into her environment has a larger role in this rather than just the linguistic one, without being able to mirror certain thoughts, emotions, etc as a child it deprived her brain of the necessary context to easily distinguish tone and facial expressions similarly to that of someone with autism.

    Theory of Everything of Languages

    Made by Alex Cross

    S » R
    S ›( I )› R
    I = MꓵC
    M = { ζ¹, ζ², … , ζⁿ }
    C = { σ¹, σ², … , σⁿ }
    ζꓵσ = μ
    I = { μ¹, μ², … , μⁿ }
    μ = ∃! εP(м) ꓵ ∃! εP(cⁿ)
    μ = ( ∃! εP(м) ꓵ ∃! εP(cⁿ) ) ꓵ ∃! εP(cⁿ)
    μ = { ρ, α }
    P(μ) = { (ρ), (α), (ρρ), (ρα), … , (nρnα) }
    Ω = ∃! εP(μ) – {α}

    Bilinguals who grew up speaking both languages at the same time also never learn a language, we absorb both but are more dominant in one, usually the one spoken the most in outside of home interaction.

    In the future, English will be extinct as cultures change and people find new ways to communicate. Nothing lasts forever, really. Even if it's the most spoken language of the world for centuries, it would just die while other languages derived from it will live.

    Kinda shocking when you say most people are monolingual. Here in India, the bare minimum would be knowing 2 languages- Hindi and English. For us in Nagaland, we got our tribal language, Nagamese to speak inside the state and English/Hindi for outside. Proud to say I can speak 4 languages without even giving conscious effort.
