But over the years, her sisters began to suspect that she might have died at the hands of a family member. Then, just as an investigation got underway to prove she was murdered, she reappeared in Phoenix, Arizona. But was this the real Mary Day, or someone claiming to be her?

Not sure testing the father's DNA would help, since you made the point that the wife had multiple affairs and even had at least one child from an affair. Very strange case…I can see why it wasn't really solved definitively.

That mask reminds me of the lucid dreaming mask Stanford put out years ago. It would estimate how long it would take for REM dreaming to start as someone fell asleep, and it would blink red lights into a persons closed eyes. These lights were a clue. If a person saw something red and flashing in their dream – a traffic light, police car, etc, that was supposed to clue someone in to the fact that they were dreaming. From there they could become lucid and control the dream.

This reminds me of the show, Last Seen, on Apple right now. Similar thing, a little girl disappears and is supposedly found years later in a gravesite in the woods. Except we find out it's not her! 🤨

I feel Mary likely found out her dad killed someone else, that will likely never be discovered, and the trauma caused a huge memory gap.

Want another bizarre and interesting case? My mother helped my father obtain a false identity in the 70s. I lived with him for 16 years and never knew his real name. He claimed to have escaped from prison. And that's the tip of the iceberg.
