I Was Skeptical About This At First.

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | January 14, 2026

Rick Rubin is one of my favourite music producers. He has worked with incredible artists and seems to be able to deliver undeniably great albums. I’m going to react to an interview clip of him discussing the different creative processes some artists have when writing a song in the studio. I have a different way of writing songs to the way Rick describes in this video, I never really thought it could work that way, clearly I was wrong! Let me know what you think of he said!

Paul McCartney used a similar method for Yesterday. " Scrambled eggs, oh my darling how i love yor legs" it doesn't reduce the finished piece though – masterpiece .

I think saying songs come from the "ether" discredits a person's own talent. A lot of people could wait forever and never "catch" anything. Give yourself credit.

Totally disagree with your observations. Surely if you making lyrics can be as natural as speaking in which case is everything you say nonsense? Same with you being able to play the guitar after hearing a song once…did you pre meditate it? Prob not just your skill set is playing the guitar

Very inspiring stuff because the connection with the subconscious maybe the only way for artists to avoid inventing a template and making the same music over and over again. Have to leave now because I'm needed to comment on some football related stuff. All the best!!

All my songs are about deconstructing the notion of self, which comes from a penchant for Advaita. The word "elf" therefore pops up quite a lot. Funny how the rules say we need to make words rhyme and we are obedient little people, so that's what we do, make them rhyme. Cash's "Hurt" + Caravaggio video is a masterpiece.

Frankie's performance on Conquerors was really good. That ending vocal harmony just ends the album feeling great. Makes me feel ready to start back on Barbarian over again, lol.

Rhyming is not a talent we will never have new real music again as long as people keep rewarding mediocrity and little too tok dances appealing to the lowest common denominator that's why the Kardashian's are so popular

I call it the ether. And there are most definitely song fragments and melodies floating around out there waiting to be found/find you. They want to be expressed and will attach to anyone who happens to be tuned in and holding a guitar, sitting at a piano, etc. It’s almost hard to take credit for a song that “you came up with”. At least that’s how it’s always felt to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️ f’ing hippy…

6:40 That's how I do it… I'll just mouth words/fake words and then I'll listen back and write down what they sound to me later. Some would say it's a crazy way to write, baby.

I met John Gorka, a folk singer once and asked him about a song of his called Scraping Dixie. It’s a sad and desperate song and I always wondered who it was about and it’s meaning. Turns out john gorka found a book of southern sayings and he used it as a song writing exercise! As simple as that. Still, it’s a beautiful song.
