Grow Chestnut Trees the Easy Way with a Humble 5 Gallon Bucket

Gold Shaw Farm | February 7, 2026

Here’s a comprehensive guide on the cheapest and easiest way to start hundreds of chestnut tree seedlings from seed. All it takes is a 5-gallon bucket, sand, and a little hardware cloth. I start hundreds of chestnut trees with this method each year for orchards, food plots, and permaculture projects. This method is better than the refrigerator method for stimulating cold stratification.

I got some chestnuts my dad gave me. He lived in Europe ( Netherlands) i wonder if they were the edible kind. I want to stratify them and plant trees but I don't know if there is even a poisonous chestnut or if all chestnuts can be eaten. if you know let me know. I am going to plant them anyways.

Thanks for your video….you have inspired us to plant some more Chestnuts on our farm. We harvested a couple of hundred pounds of Chinese chestnuts this year. Most were sold fresh, but we ended up "fresh freezing" about 40 pounds. They have been in our freezer for about 4 weeks. Do you think these could be sprouted using your process…or, did the freezer kill the nut ?

Last year I tried the stratification / germination both ways: in the fridge and your way. The fridge: alot of rot and mold very little germination. Your way was high germination, estimate 80 percent, very little mold and now I have 30 seedlings/trees that I'll be planting. and I'll be doing it again this year.
Thank-you so much for sharing !

I have 80 acres that I want to plant to mainly chestnuts. I'm having trouble sourcing seed from blight resistant trees. I'll plant a few of the named varieties and hybrids to have chestnuts earlier but buying hundreds isn't possible. You have any good sources? Thanks, J

Hi there, I have planted chestnut seeds and they've grown to be about half a meter currently however I am noticing the ends of the leaves turn yellow/brown. Is this normal? If not, what can I do to help my trees?

    Great Video Great Info,
I would use perlite instead of sand less chance of mold. Also my experience in growing trees it is best to plant the seeds where you want the tree. That way when the tap root grow it heads down to natural water deep in the grow, where as you transplant the tree from a pot or somewhere else the root is retarded in its growth and WILL NEVER be what it could have been.
So just plant the seeds out in the grove .
