Fun With Lasers And Audio (and synths).

Benn Jordan | April 4, 2026

Today we quickly make a laser audio transmitter, laser microphone, invisible laser microphone, and a…underwater CV laser modulator.

I’m a musician, I played guitar in a post-rock band and produced downtempo electronica in the early ‘00s. In 2008 I decided to go back to college and I got a 4-year degree in media studies, then went to tech school for a 2-year degree in electronics engineering. This shit right here is my entire life. Seriously well done.

"Do not ever plug a laser receiver into your modular synthesizer unless you have a good understanding of circuitry and a module that protects the incoming signal." And plugging a laser receiver into the synthesizer is central to the mentioned idea of reducing or eliminating the obnoxious laser glow?
It sounds like infrared might be better for sound quality anyway (and avoid the question of making the green laser less visible), but is that 100% invisible? I want to be unobtrusive, but I don't need to be particularly stealthy, and I believe infrared light doesn't naturally refract into visible light just by hitting windows, so I think I'd be aiming IR blind (which might be bad for my eyes at any wattage, and I think I wouldn't even know if I were shining it into my eyes?) or using an IR camera, which seems like an extra layer of complication I'd prefer to avoid.

lol i love that Benn spent a 9-minute video on what would and has taken academic experimental musicians a semester or longer to pull-off… says a lot about autodidacticism 🤘

This man…. This is… I can't even… I've been studying and learning about synthesis, and modular, for a while now. I've just met what is effectively the man who taught the smartest teacher I've known. This man is an unabashed genius. And he uses it to make music with laser pointers. 😛 Incredible

Do you think it would be possible to pull the balanced audio trick with this, and send two lasers, one with inverted signal, and then sum them, to cancel the interference and get a cleaner signal over distance?
This is very rad, and the modular performance using water and ink was gorgeous!

I know this was posted a while ago, but I was wondering…. could this work by dropping glitters into the tank along with the ink – if it sinks of course? It would block the light beam and, you know, might look kind of trippy too. Fine sand might work as well, and always bring you back to clear(ish) water.

I keep coming back for the ink part as this still blowing my mind how "easily" sound can be altered by light (if it travels by light that is but still!)

Now if only you would have set this up to play the bubbles in your chocolate milk. See Mom, it serves a purpose, it's fun, and it's chocolatey good. Cool stuff Ben. Tanks for sharing!

looks like aurora borealis : )

Today I heard an interesting program on Norwegian radio about people who claim to be able to hear sounds from the norther lights. That's not possible, but what might be the case, and what scientists now are trying to figure out is if radio waves, magnetic something or whatever is causing grass, twigs, hear in your ear or something else, to vibrate in audio rate.

In e few years your invention will be as common as the spring tank. Maybe try this with several lasers in a larger tank or a swimming pool?

Can you tell me a bit more about what the CV is controlling? I showed this to my physics students and they were blown away, but also very curious about what you created and how it was controlled by the light.

Amazing stuff. Going through your content on your series has been really helpful. How about creating a video on some of your acoustic instruments? More specifically, your Ronroco, the strings you use and the tuning you prefer on it. There seems to be a shortage of good Ronroco videos on Youtube. Cheers!
