Black bear destroys camera on beaver dam
This bear just had that crazy look in his eye…the look that appears when the irresistible biological urge to destroy trail cameras emerges and takes hold. An addiction common to all bears that is manifested by compulsive camera-seeking behavior and the resulting high bears get once cameras have been destroyed.
We share many of our trail camera ‘successes’ but this is a good example of a failure! We set up this camera on a beaver dam in a remote area in September knowing we probably wouldn’t be able to check it until winter.
This particular pond was quite scenic and seemed perfect for a camera. We retrieved the camera in late January only to find out that this big boy had destroyed it literally 1 day after we deployed it.
A real bummer but thats how it goes! Not the first camera we have had destroyed by bears and certainly won’t be the last!

Why do the bears seem to go after the cameras more than any other critter?

I think this bear has aspirations to be a photographer. He wanted to take the camera home, maybe make some home videos 😂

Bears are too smart. They know when something is unnatural.

Spray the camera with some type of deterrent or around the base like hot chili pepper powder

I had this same thing happen to one of my trail cams, the bear completely destroyed it, the fix vaseline and ghost pepper powder, I know it's sounds pretty cruel but it works, a little goes a long way

That large bear was just wanting to see what was so odd about the camera. Better luck next time. So many animals give the cameras a direct and suspicious look when first encountered. Some just act on that suspicion.

Bear halitosis. This is my territory and I'm the chief bear so this does not seem right and the camera must go.
