Interesting, but a lot of your ideas won't work where I live. My chicken house is located at almost 65 degrees northern latitude. Tonight the temperature will be around minus 30 degrees F. I have an insulated 12 x 16 foot chicken house with two heat lamps. Today's daylight was only 3 hours and 50 minutes. But enough of my complaining, I'll finish watching the video.

Another very cold resistant breed from Canada is Chantecler, might be rare in the States though (it's an heritage breed from Québec)
Good for eggs (~4-5 / week) and can also be raised for meat.
5 or 6 months old hens will start laying.

Have you tried Icelandics? I'm curious. I've heard they are extremely cold hardy, but not excessively….cooperative. They take "free range" to new heights. They'd RATHER repopulate the woods. If you can contain them they might work well during vermont winters. I have two Americana/Leghorns. Kinda thin skinned when it comes to cold. Raised them indoors, and they tend to come back in during the winter. (Bonus: layed ever single day all winter) Can't blame them. Next ones will be outdoors, once spring is warm, at the earliest appropriate age. Will be a bit more cold hardy; because indoors is a pain, even with two. I want to find out what worked for YOU in mid winter; because if they survive Vermont winters they'll be fine outdoors in Virginia. Less "comb-ey", puffier, more stout. I like the "dog cam" Cochins may be an option, as we want to handle them as well, and they're laid back as a breed. No more silkies! LOL They're cute but can't be sexed and frequently fool you. We had "Roo-Paul". He was a hen until he wasn't. Late bloomer. I LOVE the goats! LOL We're in a tiny home but I can DREAM! Thank you! I love your videos!

I feel like Orpingtons and Wyandottes are the classic barnyard layers in cold climates if you aren’t getting the sex-linked tractor supply birds. But personally I aspire to own Crested Cream Legbars again (SUCH beautiful eggs!), and also Salmon Faverolles for pink eggs!

Shifting gears from routine is a pain, adhd just makes it harder, it can be good because you can hyper focus but coming back to routine can be then tough 😊

Morgan if you read comments, Wyandotte chickens don't have standard comb, they have scallop combs and they are the best winter layers

I am in the greater Seattle area. We don't get the coldest weather. But our Orpingtons do really well in the cold weather. They are prolific layers and have a really nice, calm personality.

Glad you have Bielefelders. We are in our third year of breeding Bielefelders on our farm in New Hampshire. They live out on the pasture in a Chickshaw all year and their hardiness is just amazing. They also all lay extra-large eggs.
