Article VIII – Constitutional Amendments

More than four years ago, the Lac du Flambeau Tribe began the Constitutional Reform process, and since then has been educating members of the community on the fundamentals of sovereignty and self-determination.
As a sovereign nation within the United States, we have inherent rights that include establishing our own government, making our own laws, determining who is a citizen of our nation, and determining how we will finance our sovereignty for the well-being of our community (education, health, etc.)
When the Tribe established itself as a sovereign nation, we used the federal government’s boiler-plate constitution. Articles of the Constitution weighed in favor of the U.S. government’s perspective, and did not focus on the well-being of the Tribe or our needs as Indian People. As we look at other successful tribes whose economy progressed under sovereignty, we recognized it was in our best interests to amend our Constitution and customize it to be more inclusive of our entire membership.
To begin the process of updating the Tribe’s Constitution, work has begun on Article VIII – Amendments. A community information meeting will be held on Nov 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Lake of the Torches Convention Center. Sign-in will begin at 5:30 pm. All Tribal Members and Descendants are invited. Members who are 21 years and older will receive a $20 free play. Members under 21 will receive a free buffet ticket.
The Secretarial Election is tentatively scheduled for Dec 3rd.
