How Culture Makes Us Feel Lost – Dr. Gabor Maté On Finding Your True Self Again

Pursuit of Wonder | December 11, 2025

Dr. Gabor Maté gives a beautiful speech on human nature and the implications culture has on our ability to maintain it. In this segment of the speech, he discusses four different categories of self-alienation, and provides a sentiment of hope to stay in touch with our true nature as we move forward through the challenging times of modern culture.

This video is transformative in nature and is intended for educational purposes. Therefore, it falls under fair use.

If you're reading this right now, I just want to say; I'm rooting for you. We’re strangers, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care. I know what it’s like to feel like you're pushing a boulder uphill. I felt that way until I picked up Manifest and Receive by Eva Hartley. I can’t explain it perfectly, but it changed my whole perspective. Since then, things have been flowing—money, peace, confidence. Maybe this is your moment too. Stay open. Wishing you more than you ever imagined. 💫💰

What a beautiful speech and what a legend. The same with Charles Darwin he also talked about cooperation but everyone focuses too much on the tooth and claw. Humans survive because we work together also look at the new sign of ecology and especially social ecology as we move forward into the future. It’s time that we rethink our common held Myths. Powerful talk.

"This constant lying is not aimed at making the people believe a lie, but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore.
A people that can no longer distinguish between truth and lies cannot distinguish between right and wrong.
And such a people, deprived of the powe to think and judge, is, without knowing and willing it, completely subjected to the rule of lies. With such a people, you can do whatever you want."
    Hannah Arendt

There's a subtle conditioning in modern society.I call it "CCI".
Compliance, complacency, and indifference. We start by being indifferent to the painsand struggles of others, and finally we stop caring about our own wellfare. Our physical, mental, and spiritual health.Sad,and so preventable.

What is also important to say is that THERE IS NO ONE DOING THIS TO US INTENTIONALLY, this is only a part of a human path to grow. You know, roots to hell. I pray to us all to pass this lifelong exam.

My gut feeling is telling me 2 things. Both are totally polarized from one another 😢 And there's no way to find out which one is right. It's maddening. I'm stuck in limbo. It's hell. 😪 How do you deal with that? Please Dr. tell me?

That "All we have to do…" at the end of the upload has to be presented positively. But he's talking about the entire system needing to be changed. That's an enormous task. It makes me think of the sixties when a vast number of people really did get together in order to make some changes. Who cares if it was misguided in some ways, or if it was ultimately silenced? A lot of people got together and found some common causes (and not online). It would be great to see something like that happen again & be a part of it. It's possible, but it doesn't seem likely as things stand. We spend more time communicating online than anywhere else these days. Going downtown was a lot more fun even in the 80s & 90s. People are so much more guarded & busy today. That's just a fact.

And we are also made and built and supposed to work together as one in community in relationships and families just as much as our hands and feet and brain all work together to create a body that is exactly perfect for living

The fact that the audience for this speaker is majority women says it all. This is socialist nonsense that may sound 'good', but in reality it is worst than cancer. Go look at Venezula

What a bunch of woo woo. Who we are is beings evolved to be hunter gatherers living off the land. No wonder modernity is difficult. We did not evolve for it. Finding your "true self" is just made up BS to part you with your money. There is no ultimate meaning to anything. We have to create or find meaning in our lives.

You know listening to this, I feel that I already did. When I was young, i was so interesting the universe and exploring it, to not live a conventional life but to just explore and map out the cosmos. As time went on i lost that, i wanted to be a youtuber, i wanted to be a fireman, a soldier, a police officer, a politician, but nothing truly resonated with me. It wasn't until 2020 when i went back to the root feeling again, I was watching the movie interstellar when i figured it out and slowly tried to get my interest in space back. Then, funny enough, Rick and Morty helped solidify that feeling and made me interested in space and time and the multiverse. 2022 I plan to work for the Navy as a Nuclear electrical mate and get my education and start working on theoretical physics and quantum physics and find a way to explore the stars and maybe one day the multiverse. Feeling in touch with has never made me more sure about what im doing now and im going head first into sure and happy with this.
