Why is the MLB so white?

Garrison Hayes | November 2, 2025

Demographics in the MLB are… interesting. The NFL and NBA are majority-Black. MLS is one of the most geographically diverse leagues in the world.

Compare those leagues to the American baseball and a really interesting question emerges: Why are there so many white people in the MLB? Well, I think I found the answer.

This is the beginning of a series I’m making about race, class and American sports. Subscribe so you don’t miss new videos!

Don't think this video goes deep enough. Personally, I would look into the changes to player scouting and development from 1990s to now. I'd also look more deeply into something you mentioned in this video: the domestic baseball programs within the education system, specifically the programs that feed into the MLB.

Kids are mistreated in little league, high school. Kids lose interest because the well of white kids parents donate money and put them in front of good baseball players. Kids would rather play football and basketball because they feel like they get a better chance. My son threw a fast ball in the 90s. The pitcher in front of him familhad money. His grandfather was a coach at a know D1 school. He sat behind him. Only pitched 1 inning a game. In little league he was the only black player on the team. They put him in right field.

    1. Why did you compare baseball to basketball instead of football.? Which has more equipment than baseball and comparative cost. Also basketball has AAU teams which is the equivalent of a baseball travel team.

    2. Since baseball is mostly latino there a lot of kids in Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and DR that play the game. Lastly, if you love to play a game no one is going to stop you. You have people from all over the world playing baseball.

Also yes you, me and Ty Cobb agree the Bambino was the first brother in mlb.

One can argue with its asian, latin america, and caribbean prescence Baseball is the most inclusive game out of the big 3. Oddly enough football is the least.

Black people consume the most luxury goods in this country but cannot afford giving their kids used gloves and cleats off of eBay like my parents did. I think the problem relies in the priorities, not necessarily a systemic racism issue.

Your video it's got some very skewed statistics! If I have a job that pays me $20 an hour and a black man has a job that pays him $20 an hour and our kids want to play baseball then that decision is within the family. That's nothing to do with access! Sounds like you're kind of race hustling a little bit!

Lol the sheer amount of "what-about" comments that were so obviously written before even finishing the video is hilarious and actively proves Garrison's point that white America will do whatever it can to explicitly and implicitly protect what they deem to be theirs then and now and forever

Lol baseball isn't expensive. Kids in Latin countries play on dirt patches with a stick and make it to the mlb. Blacks got an excuse for literally everything

If there is a black kid that can't afford to play baseball in some mostly white district I guarantee you there is someone there that will help that kid. Not only that there is goodwill, there is yard sales, and all kinds of other ways to get gear. Sorry, but I just can't fathom any kid not being able to afford gear and that is why the kid doesn't play. Perhaps if you went out into the field and did some actual reporting it may be more convicting. Go talk to families that cannot afford to buy their kid gear.

This video does a good job of illustrating the barriers, both historic and economic, facing potential black players but doesn't even attempt to explain why the number of black players has fallen so dramatically since the 1980s and 1990s.
