With NASA’s announcement of organic molecules in 3 billion year old rocks on the surface of Mars, I wanted to talk about why we are so fascinated with old things, and break down what are the oldest things in the universe.

You mentioned the oldest animal as a tortoise, but that's not strictly correct. Jonathan was the oldest known land animal.
Bowhead whales can live for over 200 years, the longest-lived mammals yet known. Greenland sharks can live for more than 500 years. 500! And then there are some clams that can live for over 500 years, as well. One still living specimen was determined to be 507 years old. What that thing was born, Magellan was still on his famous first planetary circumnavigation voyage. The protestant reformation was just starting and Hernan Cortes was destroying the Aztecs.
That's a long ass time ago.

I'm kind of a new viewer and have been watching some of these older videos (you should pick up the podcasts again, btw, but I like longer content, so maybe that's just me). Anyway, an article from Popular Science in 2024 spoke of living microbes discovered in a rock that are two billion years old.

In Japan and Italy there has been a lot of pension fraud. This leads to people who are decades older on paper than biological age. So instead of collecting pension at 65, they fake birth certificates and start collecting at 45 years old and add 20 years to their age.
