Stand-up comedian Ben Moore defends a movie from the past that hasn’t aged well, while explaining the plot to his much younger friend Jordan Elias (who hasn’t seen it). Hilarity ensues.

The past really was doing its best here. They were trying to show positive depictions of Black people while still targeting a White audience, which was fairly progressive for the time.

Honestly, I never got the ire over this. The simple fact of the matter is that freed slaves DID have it pretty bad after emancipation. A lot of them DID look back on better days. I think that's what's so interesting about the setting. It shows an actual, un-hollywood version of some of the darker events in histroy, just viewed through the eyes of a child who didn't understand or remember the before times. His father is seemingly writing pieces that upset southerners (so probably more on the 'right side of history') but he just understands that his dad is gone. He is friends with the children of former slaves and doesn't understand why some people treat him differently. He is eagerly interested in the stories. It's honestly kind of sweet. Its like a slightly less problematic jojo rabbit. It's just a kid being a kid in a dark time.

For the people hating this movie, have you seen it or are you just a sheep following whet you heard? The songs and stop are great. Watch it or STFU. It’s better than what come from gangster rap and what it says.

My first grade teacher Mr. Heilms, would pretend to fall asleep and wake up as either frankenstein, dracula, or the mummy and tell a stories he'd told us stories of brehr rabbit and abiyoyo, which is crazy that he was teaching us african tradition in the first grade without us even realizing it.
