Song of the South (part two) – This Aged Great!

Honestly, I never got the ire over this. The simple fact of the matter is that freed slaves DID have it pretty bad after emancipation. A lot of them DID look back on better days. I think that's what's so interesting about the setting. It shows an actual, un-hollywood version of some of the darker events in histroy, just viewed through the eyes of a child who didn't understand or remember the before times. His father is seemingly writing pieces that upset southerners (so probably more on the 'right side of history') but he just understands that his dad is gone. He is friends with the children of former slaves and doesn't understand why some people treat him differently. He is eagerly interested in the stories. It's honestly kind of sweet. Its like a slightly less problematic jojo rabbit. It's just a kid being a kid in a dark time.

I saw SOTS in the theatre back in 1986 when it was re-released. Loved it.
