One big difference in the Apollo era was that most of the missions were crewed, and human pilots are better at problem solving than machines. Plus the manned missions also could absolutely not afford to mess up: if a robotic probe crashes it's an expensive mistake, but if you don't return a crew alive youve you've got a much bigger problem on your hands.

I know you will disagree with me, but we didn’t go to the moon. Get real. I always wondered prior to your podcast how on earth the landers with those spindly legs landed successfully every single time on the moon. And then went up in the air circled the moon and attached to the main capsule, not possible, too complicated. And if it had happened, we would definitely have had fatalities but every single mission was a success strange.

The real reason we’re having trouble: Space Yahtzees! They escaped to the moon after WW2 and setup a secret moonbase mining Helium 3. They’ll shoot down most probes that get sent up there.
(There is a movie about this called Iron Sky.)

Unbiased news is no longer a thing, if it ever truly was. The older I get, the more I learn, the more I realize that the "good ol' days" of honest journalism were likely just as slanted as what we see today – we just didn't realize that.
As for the "successor" question or rebranding – I would suggest NOT doing that. After seeing what happened to TKOR… and Because Science… yeah don't do it.
