The Online Left is Cooked

This has actually always been my main issue with political content online. There is a focus on entertainment and pithiness that means the message needs to be presented in a way that may not actually ultimately be productive. Like yea, we definitely have conversations we otherwise wouldn’t have had but it stokes resentment so much more often.

Communication and the ability to do it well is actually incredibly essential to coalition building. Mosquito Dorito could have made the same argument and many of us would have been on his side. But instead he fixated on content and in the process made or very clear that at his core, he is only in very superficial community with black people but ultimately assumes they aren’t intelligent or politically involved enough to already understand certain things. There as no real take away from what he said, but a lot of people were entertained.

i'm european and this problem became so so evident to me when the war in ukraine started. people literally talked about it and treated it as if it was the football match of the decade. so many "gotcha" moments to "own" putin, people making fun of russian soldiers for having shit tanks, or shoes or whatever, painting houses in ukranian colours, destroying russian-made items including FOOD… a complete and utter detachment from the seriousness of the situation and the fact that people and animals are literally out there dying while they're making putin memes…

i was so so sickened… and all of this was purely among the folks supporting ukraine, not even the "cross faction" crap

THIS is the problem right here. The progressive Left being so confident that taking as righteous a stand as possible means they know what they're talking about, that they must be doing something proactive despite not really being very curious about why or how any of the things they are concerned about really work. I hate Netanyahu and his revenge war, all the rhetoric from the USA should be about protecting civilians of all stripes. But all I hear from most progressives including people I love dearly is unfocused, uninformed, dis-empowering nihilism. I know because I studied it, that you can study the US relationship with Israel for months and still not understand how complex it is and why we find ourselves in the position we are in. Instead it always comes down to progressive buzzwords like "imperialism", and declarations of how simply we could do the right thing if only we would just do it. Very seldom is that the case. I'm sick of it. And the shade at Obama and his middle-east policies here is almost laughable IF you actually cared about it at the time. I'm not saying he's perfect, he's a politician, but he delegates authority, some of those people (HRC ahem) are far more hawkish than he was, that's how our democracy works. He's the only president in my lifetime – and I'm older than you by a lot – who actually tried to fundamentally alter our relationship with Israel. He's the only president in my lifetime who actually, believable cared about Muslims. Where are the channels to actually have deep conversations that include details and nuance and not facile progressive takes pretending to be the real enlightened takes. So so tired of this. You're not helping.

(We’re arab, and muslim to a broader extent of solidarity, not “middle-eastern”). But to be clear, i don't think we have any right to tell black americans how to vote or who to vote for, bc we dont face the same repression yall do (and many of us who have lighter skin face much much less). The reason we’re left with these shitty candidates is: white folks. Many of us are voting for Jill Stein, not perfect at all. We’re just trying to make our communities safer by showing the dems that we have voting power and we’ll try to protect ourselves better here on out. It’s our own issue, and its just the shitty truth rn that it’s basically impossible for minority communities and diaspora groups in the US to show solidarity across racial lines by Voting. But voting isnt the end-all, obviously. I know this isnt exactly perfect the space to have this conversation, just wanted to add this here.

The very fabric of Palestinian society is being destroyed at this moment, and recently Lebanon has been made another target. There's so many words I could use to describe what they have gone through in the past months (not to mention what they've gone through for the last 70+ years), but a lot of those words would probably get my comment hidden, so I'll just say that I don't care if anyone is offended by people pointing out that Kamala has done nothing to show that she's going to stop this catastrophe.

You said it yourself, this is an illusion, just like how Obama made you and others feel hopeful for genuine change. We shouldn't be falling for this anymore, not just because of the lessons we learned from seeing what Obama actually turned out to be, but because of how clear it is already that Harris is playing those exact same tricks and how her stance on the war changes depending on who, where or when she's talking to. This isn't someone that has showed any qualities to trust in anything but the most basic establishment Democrat progressive policies.

If people aren't woken up to how genuinely serious this situation is by the countless videos online of the horror in Gaza, then I don't know what sort of "proper" or more "empathetic" approach could convince them.
