What If You Were Made of Dark Matter?

What If | October 11, 2025

What would it actually be like if every particle in your body converted into a dark matter particle? And how long could you last in that state? Everything that we can see in the Universe is a massive mash-up of electrons, protons and neutrons fused into atoms. It’s what is called baryonic, or just ordinary, matter. Your body is made up of it too.
But there is a lot of stuff out there that we don’t see, stuff that we call dark matter and dark energy.

What If is a mini-documentary web series that takes you on an epic journey through hypothetical worlds and possibilities. Join us on an imaginary adventure — grounded in scientific theory — through time, space and chance, as we ask what if some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence were different.

Just to be clear to people that don't know, we aren't sure if "dark matter" even is matter as we know it. Dark matter is what we call the phenomenon of things seeming to have wide halos of weird mass distributions where we don't see any matter. We only call it that cause it's behavior is similar to matter, though if dark matter is a particle or set of particles then they would all need to be very weakly interacting, in order to be cold, spread out, and invisible, and also massive, as in exerting a gravitational pull. A great number of things could be causing that effect, but as of right now some kind of particle is just the best explanation we can think of based on the measurements.
