I absolutely love this film. The acting is incredible and the dialogue flows in an effortless way. I adore the structure, pacing, and seamless transitions in and out of the flashbacks and looks into Joey and Bill's inner monologue. The "movie poster" intros to flashbacks of past flames was inspired. The jokes and funny moments are so well integrated into the flow that it has a natural feeling as opposed to "let's insert this zany situation just for laughs" like some rom-coms suffer from. I'm in a similar stage of life as Joey and Bill, and it was refreshing and humanizing to see them struggle in a lot of the same ways I do. Incredible work, all around.

I dislike the opening monologue.
Paraphrase: "Stop pursuing life after a nice feeling because I've had no good feelings after it."
Translation: "I'm a bad person incapable of creating situations that feel good. You should never try like me."

Why is Hannah Monsour not a star yet? I don't want to be mean to everyone else but her performance stands out by miles from the rest! Whenever she was on screen it was interesting

"The knee touch" is genuinely one of my favorite movie openings ever. I'm always thinking about Josephine's monologue.

The first time I watched Hiccups, I didn't really like it. I watched it again today on a whim, and I am so happy that I did. Joel, if you are reading this, I think this is one of your best movies! It's so funny and so beautiful. "Is it still the right thing if you say the right thing at the wrong time" hit me like a hammer. Patrick and Hannah are great!!!

This is interesting, but feels like Woody Allen or similar from the 80s-90s with the fourth-wall-breaking-monologues. Voice over would have been intimate versus invasive (The Wonder Years).

I just saw that TMDB removed this and Pretend That You Love Me from their listings as they're "Amateur YouTube Movies"… That's not right, I'm utterly appauled by that as it was a great hub to look at your work.

This one kind of made me cry. This is so well done, I love the progression from a relationship that works to one that doesn't. First time I saw this I didnt think much of it. Now I see it again and it's just so unbelievably realistic. I had an ex that near the end we argued more than we talked. When we broke up I was talking to my friend and she said "I always thought you guys were so happy" you really can't tell whats going on in someone's life.

That line at 1:39:32 ONLY works coming from a woman.
Men get divorce raped every day in this country and lose everything because an "empowered" "free" "strong"" "independent" woman has an entire government and social construct to back her up when she decides to scheme and manipulate and quit.
Over a case of hiccups.
Men do not get any choice. It's never OUR time, no matter how much we put into the relationship. We are owed nothing and have zero rights.

This was my favorite of the 12. I'm watching this again with a friend tonight. It marks my 3rd time watching through.
All of the movies were bangers, this is a close lead with D. brothers and the kidnapping one, the first one and the claymation with Nokeric.
This film stands out to me. I wish that every film was this direct and this perfect. Like from the premise, to the setup, to the delivery of concept, to how it ended leaving you with ultimately mixed opinions on both protags. Usually when watching a movie you kind of draw a few, or sometimes more than a few — comparisons to, "well I would do these things different"
This is one of the rare films where you watch it, and just agree. With the format, with the delivery, with what you are compelled to think on. Not a single line, motive, plot piece, anything to be changed.
10/10 film

The movie warns you in the intro that everything else after the knees touching sucks. I knew this, and I continued to watch despite how much it reminds me of a past relationship that withered away. Relationships aren’t just all sunshine and perfection. It takes work, and you have to put in the effort to see great results. Thanks for that reminder again Joel, beautiful story.

Joel thanks for this movie. It really captures the feeling of having a connection that is real, even significantly so, but not quite right for reasons that maybe feel more within our control than they are, including these abstract ideas of growth that are easier said than done (and not even that easy to say). The different styles of narrative throughout was incredibly creative and added a lot, never felt gimmicky. Your movies often leave me feeling a little bittersweet, with a sharpened awareness of how messy love and relationships always are, but also the feeling you get where you watch a movie and the dog dies and you didn't know it was gonna die and you're really sad but you also sort of needed to experience that because you had a dog that died, or even if you didn't have a dog, like, the dog in your heart, or something. Anyhow thanks. My favourite thing you've done since 'pretend that you love me'.
