What If We Killed All Mosquitoes?

What If | November 13, 2025

They’re the deadliest thing on Earth. They suck your blood and spread disease, killing nearly one million people each year. Are we talking about vampires? Lions? Gorillas? Actually, none of these things. We’re talking about mosquitoes. Are mosquitoes really this deadly? What would happen if they all disappeared? Would humanity be better off?

What If is a mini-documentary web series that takes you on an epic journey through hypothetical worlds and possibilities. Join us on an imaginary adventure — grounded in scientific theory — through time, space and chance, as we ask what if some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence were different.

Just wanna clear things up, mosquitoes are NOT in Alaska because of climate change, they have been up there as long as recorded history, which suggests that they’ve been there at least since the end of the last ice age

Yes. It will make it paradise.

    Remove mosquitoes = less annoying
    Remove mosquitoes = less pesticides
Less pesticides = less damage to our ecosystem
Less damage to our ecosystem = pollination + thriving environment
Thriving environment = better for everyone. Therefore removing mosquitoes is better

Would check the effects the summer breeding cycles of all those tiny spiders first. They seem to like mosquitoes.
What if we accidentially drop their numbers aswell? For us, not the shiniest folks roaming the planet, but they make quite some sense, for us.
What if, we cut this population in half? Idk, just looks like it could be harder for mosquitoes to develop some resistance against that – process, as long they don't reach wasp size, but than we probably got a different problem anyways..but thats a Hollywood topic. Simple script, but nice to watch how this would work out. Get some scientists, for the math and you got a movie already.

Certain tiny species of midges, which are relatives of mosquitoes, are the primary pollinators of the cacao flower, meaning without them, there would be no cacao beans and therefore no chocolate. That is crazy 🤯 without mosquitoes there would be no Hershey's bar

🙁 there are flowers in the world that are evolved to be pollinated by mosquitoes specifically. there are mosquitoes that feed only on worms, and only on pollen, and only on other mosquitoes. wiping out the entire population of thousands of different species will always make a huge impact on the world and food chains

So I recently watched a Kurzgesagt video on some flesh consuming flies that were made infertile through radiation, maybe we could do the same?

Edit: Oh, he actually mentioned we can do this

“bUt sTiLl, iS gEtTiNg riD oF aLl mOsQuiToEs tHe riGhT tHiNg tO dO?”

Motherf^cker, a total of 777 animals have gone extinct since the beginning of the modern era in 1500, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

If we didn’t stop to think about getting rid of those animals, why THE. F*CK! should we stop to think about making the most dangerous and disgusting insect on the planet go extinct?!

I f^cking hate them and they should all be tortured to death. Every. Single. One. of them 😤
