As an Irish I’m not sure we entirely 100% deserve this special treatment but will definitely take it. Also, it doesn’t get more Irish than Paul Mescal who as you note is doing a standard interchangeable whiteness in this role apparently – but don’t be fooled, he’s a GAA-playing country boy (I believe he fell into acting thanks to an unusually enlightened school drama initiative). He was the lead in Normal People which I can’t imagine you’d f*** with, but if you f*** with the Irish you’d definitely f*** with his (IMO) absolute quintessential cultural Irishness

Thank you for this. I watched Gladiator 2 was baffled by the treatment of Denzels character. As a white person I know some of Denzel Washington stances and I was really confused that he even took the role if "dont even try to change a horible system" was the message being given at the end.
Though in watching your analysis of Wicked when you said Glenda's only off action was that she felt regret for betraying Elphaba to the White establishment. Than the ending of Gladiator 2 is in line with maintaining a white supremacist culture…so yeah. You are completely correct and we need to stop, thank you

They did a similar thing in Avatar the last airbender with characters like Jet and Hama, who were fighting against the oppression of the fire nation through violent means but they always showed them to be fighting the fight 'in the wrong way' by either causing collateral damage or specifically targetting civillians as a form of revenge for the abuse they suffered.

It's the same problem I have with Legend of Korra because you got Zaheer spitting facts about anarchism but since anarchist can't be right and we must maintain the status quo they have wrap up by saying that he wants chaos which isn't anarchism

2:36 this is the Daenerys Targaryen treatment too (broad strokes here, I know her arc is white saviorism. I mean in the sense that she suddenly took a nosedive of violence that didn’t make sense for her character so the show could justify her being a villain)

I'm watching gladiator 2 tonight. So i checked out this video to get the vibe.
It's crazy how you were confusing Gerald Butler with Russel Crow. I was doing the same thing when I watched gladiator for the first time yesterday.

Your political analysis is one thing, but I think Killmonger felt off because his motivations didn't make sense. Even if you're completely blind to the messaging, there's still a social understanding of what makes sense and what doesn't.
Then again… maybe mixing messages is a deliberate choice to confuse the audience. To make a villain FEEL off, unrealistic. To make you think "Nah… he's lying".

There is definately a difference between an antagonist and a villian, That Gladiator 2 antagonist is absolutely an example of a character whos not a villian but is technically an antagnonist. But I definately think it could have been done better from the way you are describing it.

You forgot the Cicero quote, he wasn't going to tear Rome cuz he wanted free people, he clearly stated he wanted a system in which the stronger side wins.

Yeah i really hated the Black Panther ending, like they could've had him play black panther after chadwick died, but because they killed off kilmonger, they had no alternative, so the second movie feels rushed because they jammed his sister in the roll. There could've been an ending where another event happened and black panther saves kilmonger, then dies trying to do so,and kilmonger goes through guilt over his death, because he was wrong about who black panther is. Maybe he's jailed because the fight was incomplete or something, and he's required to help Wakanda through public service and he comes to realize he was wrong about Wakanda. They're still isolationist but there's a reason for it. And that Wakanda does accept people who were born outside of Wakanda, but they become more against the white government officials that inserted themselves into Wakandan issues. They can still keep bucky, because bucky actually provides for the well being of Wakanda, as a simple shepherd. Maybe bucky becomes a roll model when it comes to teaching kids about animals and does work with young amputees who are refugees from warring areas.

I’m genuinely puzzled as to why Mr. Denzel Washington agreed to this script. What was the intention here? The ending of that film felt less like a narrative conclusion and more like a HUMILIATION RITUAL. Particularly for Black audiences. It came across as a ritualistic degradation, with Denzel Washington, an actor who has long been a pillar of excellence in Black cinema, positioned as the sacrificial figure. Frankly, it was deeply unsettling🤨.

Russell Crowe is from New Zealand … who’s English?
PS I wasn’t going to bother but I’ll definitely check out Gladiator II for this Denzel performance …
