Ways Your Life Today Is Far More Luxurious Than a Medieval King

Weird History | March 23, 2026

What was daily life like for a king or queen during the Middle Ages? Contrary to what you might imagine, it didn’t involve lounging in robes of silk and satin and indulging in lots of feasting. In reality, the life of medieval royals involved a lot of incest, sickness, and cold castles.

You’ll probably feel better about your own situation after learning what life for royalty in medieval times was like. Women were married off to very close relatives for diplomatic purposes; on many occasions, they were only in their early teens at the time. Sadly, the death rates for mothers and children were quite high, and the general lack of hygiene most definitely didn’t help.

In terms of standard of living for sure. But what sets modern poor people apart from medieval kings is time. Kings did work sure, but not gruelling hours. They didn’t have to worry about housing, clothing or food. They had the ultimate level of social security.
Poor people also don’t have access to healthcare, overseas trips, long car rides, ect because they’re always working.

Huh…my ancestors survived the bubonic plague and God knows what horrific monstrosities they faced but they still survived and now I'm here. That should be an achievement.

This really speaks to the power of the perspective of the human mind and how one chooses to see himself. And the power of belief. If a "king" from the medieval time period saw the way most of us lived, he'd shit himself. So why wouldn't I see myself as Royal and Chosen by God?

A $30 toilet attachment changed my life. For the life of me I can not figure out why people have a problem with the Bidet. I tried it after a guy said, "Would you use dry paper to get peanut butter out of shag carpet?"

It's why I don't complain about my life in the 21st century. Look at all the blessings we now have. Toilets are a necessity, not a luxury, and it's great for us to have them. Our ancestors would have loved to live like us right now. The past was definitely the worst, in so many ways. I wouldn't make it to age 33 like I am turning in a few weeks during the Middle Ages. Look at the good things we have today, I wouldn't trade the 21st century to live in for the Middle Ages.

I'll do ya one better! I think a case could be made that the standard of living today is better than someone making at least $100K fifty years ago! That may sound preposterous at first but think of all the things that we take for granted, like being able to type this very comment on this very Internet using this very machine, none of these were even dreamed of back then. Even the year 2000, once upon a time a synonym for "the future" already seems like Little House on the Prairie days compared to today.

I will be more grateful from now on. Imagining how hard our ancestors lived. We are blessed to have electricity, anesthesia and cars, and other countless inventions.

Antibiotics, thank you. Vaccines, too! I rather enjoy not dying or having those I love die from diseases that can be prevented or cured with modern medicine. Indoor plumbing and refrigeration are nifty, too. AND missing hemophilia or a "Hapsburg Jaw."

Thinking of the first line a Gladiator (2000 Movie) sequence…while watching this Weird History video!

    * Inspired by the Weird History videos about Rome.

"When would you like to live?" was a question asked by a friend. "Anytime after this one! I want to live in the future." Lost a friend over that…

I always think about the things Hollywood leaves out, like the smell of the people and places… I'm guessing you could smell a town like London from miles away.

Imagine you're going back in time, equipped with 4×4, firearms, abbundant supplies of spices, canned foods, modern medicines, gadgets & electric generator. You'll be a real life wizard.

Kings had to be on top of everything though. They were usually well educated for the time and the ones that took their job seriously were typically always busy. It was a stressful job
